I suspect anyone willing to forgo a sound system would also be willing to get rid of other "non-essentials" as well.
Things like spare tire, airco, pass seat, carpets, sound deadening, interior panels, gas struts for trunk and glass (just use prop rods), etc.
It all depends on your priorities.

Even if you took out 75 pounds, do you think youd go any faster. I used to date a chick that raced horses. She would jog in garbage bags, stave herself, etc just to weigh in less for more speed . Bear in mind the horse is only one horsepower.

i rather lose 16 lb on my body than take out my stereo 
Just get smaller speakers and change from 8-track tapes to CD's
