Anyone here ever use an Online Dating Site?

I run a web-development/IT company and we might be building a dating site for a start-up company in the near future. Just wanna do some homework on this before we start development.

Anyone here use a dating site? Could you provide some feedback on the site or sites you used and how you liked their service? Any features that you particularly liked or disliked? If you'd rather not post here, please PM me and maybe we can talk about this on AOL IM or via phone.

From what I've seen and heard, the general consensus for most people who have done the online dating thing is that most of it is not trustworthy. There are a few proven sites such as eharmony and match.com but there are also a bunch of scam ones.

Most of the scam ones have a similar M.O. They allow guys to sign up for free where they are allowed to browse listings of the 'women' members, and receive messages but not reply. The new guys then start receiving messages from women members that entice them to buy a members so they can correspond with the women that are interested in them. Once the new member signs up, the exchanges will go on for a while until the 'women' suddenly are busy or out of town and never respond to the new member again.. Coincidentally this is usually around 30 days after he signed up. Thus, they have the money and straight scammed the guy who signed up.. I doubt that the women that were writing them for the short time were actually even women..

Then you have the dating sites that are free but just harvest your e-mail address to spam you with porno sites and how to get viagra.

I am not telling you this to discourage you but the internet is an ugly place and scumbags that run scams have ruined it for legitimate people.

Unless you have a totally different business model in mind than what is already out there you face a serious uphill battle and that doesn't include proving yourself as a legitimate site first.

The company I'm working with will be a little different in that, they plan on hosting large parties in major cities throughout the U.S. so it will give the members a chance to meet up in person in a friendly/secure environment. So, it's not just a dating site. It will have a presence in the real world as well. The owners of the company have already been in the business setting up large events like concerts, etc. so they have the expertise to setup a good event.

Would that be something that could convince you to check it out? Just looking for some feedback on this project. As of now, I'm just on the development end of things but I want the site to be successful.

I'm on myspace, but it's not really a dating site, it's just general friends and networking, killing time and stuff, especially if you're a musician. However you'd be surprised how much ass you can piece from there. Although I wouldn't consider any of it serious. And it's free and is highly customizable if you can code html/css.. It's more like Hi5 and Friendster

All I can say is this. I never had soooooo much fun in my life as I did dating on-line for a summer after my divorce. I was juggling 2-3 different women each week! It was nuts!!!! It sure was fun though. :biggrin:

Didn't mean to offend anyone.. Just thought that its better to be safe than sorry.. There are tons of legitimate sites out there but I just wanted to throw out what I've seen out there.. Always better to error on the side of caution right?

At the club, at a surf shop, at the grocery store, at a friends wedding, on the elevator at work, at a scuba certification course, on a group mountain bike ride, at the tux shop, at a cocktail party, at a sushi bar, in the emergency room, or online-

I have met them everywhere- why limit yourself?
