Any NSXers buying a Lotus Elise?

Here's my dilemma: I have a '91 NSX, '94 Rx-7 (daily driver) and '79 Rx-7 (track car). I have a deposit on an Elise, arriving June or July of '04. ...and something's gotta go. I'll be using the Elise as a track car, so the '79 Rx-7 is definitely out. My question is- do I use the NSX as a daily driver or sell the '94 Rx-7 (not the most reliable car in the world) and keep the NSX as my "weekend/fair weather" car. The '94 Rx-7 would then be replaced by a... '02 GTI? WRX? any ideas? Need something a little more practical that I can get for about the sale price of the '94 Rx-7 (about $12k).

Also, just curious if any other NSXers are buying Elises, and if they plan to track them.

I'm really confused - you want two track cars?

I drive the NSX daily, and wouldn't trade it :D

nope- don't want two track cars. the Elise will be the track car. Just not sure I want to use the NSX as a daily driver (rain/snow/theft/dings/wear & tear). so... i think both RX-7's have gotta go and I'll just get a "practical" daily driver. but if i can get a clean bill of health on the engine of the '94 Rx-7, maybe I'll keep that one too....

That is one helluva good plan - I would certainly go with option 2:
Get the Elise
Keep the NSX
Get smothing a bit more 'manual grand tourer' like an older (OBDI) M3, an 02-03 Acura CL manual, an older Lexus SC300 or if you want to go sporty get an ITR.

EDIT:
Just noticed the $12k stipulation on the mileage queen, sorry!

I am not sure how quick elises will depreciate elsewhere, but in the UK you can pick one up from about $15k. Same as buying an used Civic Type R, so they are great cars to buy for a trackday car. When my CRX is rotten I'll buy one and do an engine swap.

I was debating putting down the deposit on the Elise and selling my NSX (I really can only have one toy) and ultimately decided that the Elise will likely depreciate to an even better deal in the coming years as Lotus plans on selling a bunch of them, plus there must be something lacking in the $40k Elise when compared with a $75k NSX (new of course).

I think I met you at the last NSX meet at Pohanka. I was the only yellow NSX there.

Anyways, I occasionally stopped by my local Lotus/Lamborghini dealership (only a few miles away) and saw a blue Elise there being prepped for someone.

You might want to call Criswell Lotus/Lamborghini in Gaithersburg, MD to see if they still have it. (I was there checking out a 00 Lotus Esprit V8. And no, I plan to keep the NSX).

I have a deposit on an Elise as well. But I'm so far down the list that I'm sure they will be on Ebay for 1/2 retail by the time mine is in.

I'm seriously thinking of selling my spot and waiting a few good months to let the market stabilize. 40k compared to a BoxterS or a Z4 probably isn't bad but I'm a Lotus nut.

Keep the X, buy the Subie.

Well buddy, I can help ... if.....................

you get your selling price to 20K or less... ;)

I know you'd be happy to see your X go to a good home - you've seen my SPG and know that I take great care of it...

Hope all is well and to you and all of the other NSX'ers, HAPPY NEW YEAR.

ill get rid of that 94 rx7 and get the elise. i don't know why you wanna use the elise as a track car, though. i'll drive that thing everyday and keep the 79 rx7 as the track car.

as far as the NSX. it should be a keeper unless you got dilemma financially.

i'm selling my NSX now cuz im going back to school for a lil bit. once im done i'm either getting the elise or the NSX again.

Thanks for all the input, guys- looks like I'm keeping the NSX and '94 Rx-7 (daily driver) and selling the '79 Rx-7 track car.

I've had a deposit on the Elise for 2 years-- just ordered a bright Red one with Sport Suspension package. Looking forward to seeing you NSX guys on the track. I think the Elise will compare quite well, especially on the shorter, twistier tracks where the NSX's higher top end won't come into play as much.

As for a daily driver, the NSX is better (vs. Elise) : has more creature comforts/softer ride/better ingress and egress/more luggage space/etc.

WRX is a great choice.. spend a bid money on mods will be fast as same as our NSX....and...it's a reliable turbo car...when you don't drive nsx on week, WRX won't easy to be smoked...
4WD..if you go to ski and don't want to drive a SUV, you can drive WRX and also save a lot money on fuel...
GTI... FF...not a fun car...if i were you...i will get WRX...or even STI

wow.....elise...after checking the elisetalk.com ... i want to have it too..^__^

just a side note to any of you in the DC area who want to get an Elise, are you dealing with Criswell? If so make sure you speak to Tom Skinner there. He is a friend and will take care of you.

Best of luck trying to keep up with the repair bills that go along with using the twin turbo RX-7 as a daily driver. I just dumped my RX-7 that I had been using as my daily driver for the last three years. Mine was in good shape, but I averaged over $200 a month just in parts to keep it on the road. Thats repair parts. I'm not talking about the normal wear and maintainence items like tires, alignments, shocks, plugs, oil changes, and tune ups. I 'm talking about "Oh great, whats wrong now?" items.

Even when you take great care of the 3rd gens, the turbos always seem to die every 50k miles (or less). Oh yah, and once the engine starts leaking oil, you can't get it to stop. As soon as you replace one set of oil lines, another set starts leaking, and when all those are replaced, a tubular dowel o-ring or one of the other ten million o-rings let go. So then its engine rebuild time just to stop leaving oil puddles everywhere you go.

Then there's the constant concern about losing an apex seal, and is my compression still good just from daily wear and tear... For me, it was just too much of a pain to use my RX7 as a daily driver...

Hope you have better luck than I did.
