Had a '92 300zx before I bought my NSX. Was having major tranny problems in my 300. Car wouldn't go in gear sometimes, major crunshing when down shifting from 5th to 4th. I tryed Redline MT90 and it fixed EVERYTHING. I was amazed. Anywho, wondering if NE1 has used this on an NSX. I'm having diffuculties w/ my transmission. Sometimes it won't go into 1st or Reverse at all. I have to lift the clutch pedal and force it into gear, or make sure I am on a hill so I can slip it into gear w/ ease. Any recommendations? Anyone ever try Redline MT90?

TIA,
Chris

I use redline MTL in my daily driver and it seems to work just fine. I have heard unsupported rumors that MT90 has detergents in the formula which I always understood was a bad thing for a tranny with synchros. But to answer your question w/o asking my own, I think a lot of people use Redline MTL with good success.

I've used this in the RX7 with excellent results.

The NSX was a little notchy and in quick shifting during high RPMs it was grinding.

I installed a bottle of Prolong transmission treatment and filled the rest of the tranny with MT90.

It made a huge difference.

Like hot knife through butter.

If I didn't install the Prolong treatment I would have installed Redline's MTL since the oil weight was more aligned to the factory specs.

Don't shoot.. but I have heard that the Redline products tend to oxidize quicker and sludge up if not replaced often. I've heard of a particular case in a NSX transmission where it was sludged in during a gear-swap... I wasn't too excited with it in my S2k as well...

Personally, I don't trust it in the transmission. I'd rather go with Honda...

That would be a good question for a redline tech. I've ran Mt90 in both MR2's and my 350Z, all with excellent results.

Well guys I haven't tried any Redline products, but I have tried a couple other things though. One didn't work, and the other works great.

The first one that didn't work. 2 qts of Quaker State "Q" Full Synthetic 10w-30 motor oil, 1/2 Qt Lucas Oil Modifier, 1/2 Qt Energy Release Metal Conditioner. I didn't like this mixture because it was too heavy. When I was shifting "quickly" from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th there was "Knashing of Teeth". I would have to double clutch in order for it to not grind. If the car was cold (30 to 40 degrees F) it was very hard to get into gear and shift until it warmed up well. I started doing some research here on Prime and came up with the second solution.

Take two. 2 qts GM Syncromech Fluid and 1 qt GM Friction Modifier Fluid. I noticed that this fluid poured out of the bottle like a 10w weight oil. Now the tranny shifts very smooth, goes in and out of gear easy and there is no grind in any of the gears.

I have not tried any other fluids out there. I would like to try a full synthetic tranny fluid, but it will not be of a heavy weight. I haven't decided on the Amsoil, Royal Purple or Redline.

Not NSX related, but tried Redline MTL in my 1990 M3, shifted slick, but was not very quiet. Then tried regular 85-90 gear oil. Put in a lo mi trans and am using (2) parts MT90 & (1) part MTL. Works great! Will do the same to the NSX one of these days.

(Edit, just noticed this thread was resurrected from 2000) :o)
