For those of you who are following this, I was at the dealer today and they have the
3.5 liter 6 with 400 + ponies on their radar for the next powerplant.
Also mentioning something about all wheel
traction assist which I assume will be comparable to some of the other high performance cars on the market.
Again, who knows but Honda.
Engine is supposed to be also used in RL.

I heard that the folks at Acura HQ are working on a prototype and just placed an order for 2,000 of these:

Is there room in the current NSX for a 3.5L engine with 400+ HP?

I am wondering that because we all know Ferrari is coming out with the Modena 420, and the NSX could be competitive if it had that engine swapped in for 2004.

Well, according to Sport Compact's January 2003, Volume 15 No. 1 issue, the Mugen NSX in Japan is running a bored and stroked C32B series V6 block with 3.5 liter displacement. Output circa 500 hp. Could be possible. =)

woops, that's true. But I really can't see Honda claiming 280ps in Japan and claiming 400hp in US for the same car. Not sure how Nissan pulled it off with 340hp with Q45 while it's still rated at 280ps in Japan without getting into trouble...

The Japanese "gentleman's agreement" on horsepower isn't going to stand much longer. Honda (NSX), Nissan (Skyline GT-R), and Toyota (Supra and possible supercar) have all been hinting that they're going to break the barrier, but rumor has it that each one is waiting for someone else to do it first. I'd be surprised if we didn't see one of the above debuting in the next two years with 300+ "official hp" in Japan.

There will never be a new NSX. When Honda reached their decision to build the first one they envisioned annual sales of 3-5000 units. The reality in 2002 is annual NSX sales are more like 500 units. There is no way they will invest the money required for a new car at these rates of sale and knowing Honda I doubt they will 'gussy up' an existing vehicle. Enjoy your NSX now because it's a classic and will never be replaced. I guarantee it.

don't forget that most of the time auto manufacturers report a "280bhp" on the specs but in reality many car magazines have reported more than 300 horses on some of the japanese sports...classic example: lancer evolutions have always been "conservative" in their horsepower spec.

My God-thats a scary thought.
How about a Honda Accord/Pontiac Grand am
combo with a super extra body cladding model. Let's hope Honda does indeed decline if proposed a similar deal like Toyota and Geo of the 90's
I am going to have difficulty sleeping tonight-or viewing my next C&D
Was that a Pontiac Vibe I just saw-the nightmares are slowly turning to reality

Man Soichiro , my level of boredom at work has just increased tenfold
I plan to enjoy my NSX for MANNYYYY years to come.

I would think so, but having more than 400 hp in a 3,5 liter engine implies more than 114,25 hp per liter...

Hi every body! Its been a long time... was very busy...I'm back ( sorry folks! ).

Just to add some funny things about this highly controversial subject, I read in one of our new 2003 car guide that 2004 will be featuring the coming of a new V8 powered NSX!!! They seem to be very sure about it!!!

Of course I was LOLing a lot when I read it while also hoping that they were right...

I'm looking to find a nice article on torque versus: engine layout ( v, inline, ... ), bore, stroke.

Any suggestions?

I am not so sure about this, and if Honda abandon the NSX line it will be a huge mistake IMO. Every car companies are looking madly to have an icon, a legendary model
( even by adapting and reintroducing old ones
like the Ford GT 40... ). When you have one you stick with it.

Discontinuing the NSX line will make more unhappy people than happy ones. The death of something wonderful and different in the automotive world...especially in the exotic supercar market...

IMO with some

at least 400hp

or

near 4s 0-60 AND more than 300 km/h ( 188 mph ) top speed

NSX could sell as much as Vipers and Ferraris

and if they want to be sure to sell more than 2000 units per year they only have to bring a more than 500hp @ more than 320 km/h ( 200 mph )top speed NSX.

Think about it, would you run to buy such an NSX at 90 000$ ? I mean an NSX, not a Corvette nor a Viper, but a reliable, gorgeous, light, nimble and superhandling NSX...

Honda do not have to invest as much money as they did for the first gen NSX because they do not start from a blank sheet of paper, they can benefit from the existing first generation since we are dealing with evolutions and around the NSX concept, not to forget about the S2K technology...

I understand why you think like that and I truly hope that future will prove you were wrong. But don't be afraid I enjoy really much my NSX.

2003 should show us some new NSX prototype...

Personnally I think that Honda will come up with a super 2nd gen NSX and will surprise everybody again. Why? Because they never ended to upgrade it instead of simply stoping its production.

This sounds like they are only waiting for the good timing.

When?

To not be the first to break the Japan gentlemen agreement?

To be again on top in F1?

????

We'll see...

Just like you, I am waiting for a new or at least a heavily upgraded NSX. I think it's important for Honda to continue the NSX-line.
I also think the investments for an upgrade will be lower than for the original model. I believe the current NSX-body and structure has enough potential to be used as a platform for future upgrades. An engine upgrade is in my opinion what is needed most. Going from 3.2 to 3.5 or 3.6 liters and then getting the same HP/liter output as other current Honda engies would give the new NSX a high enough power to weight ratio to keep up with Porsche and Ferrari.
I sincerely hope also that Honda will not wait too long anymore before bringing out at least something. The 2002 NSX has been an upgrade long waited for and I hope that Honda will continue doing just that.

Well,,I love reading our hopes and dreams for the future.I'm not Nostra-whats his name but don't be surprised to see the current nsx soldier on modestly upgraded and priced.,But also along side a new competitive 2nd gen car that as major Bowman said in 2001 right before he turned into a fetus will be "somthing wonderful"

Interesting article in the latest issue of Time.

http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,397522,00.html

Seems as though there's a sports car revival underway, or at least on the horizon.

Maybe Honda's just waiting for the right moment. Here's some interesting quotes...

Since 1995, sports-car sales have risen more than 50%, to about 100,000 this year, and are forecast to grow an additional 60% by 2007.

Though sports-car sales account for just 1% of total vehicle spending, automakers view the eye-catching cars as a vital way to give a gleam to their brands, enhancing the image of an otherwise utilitarian fleet and luring shoppers into showrooms.

I spoke with the sales people at the Acura booth in the Miami Auto show last month. They said Acura will be unvailing the new nsx at the New York or Detroit auto show. The car will have 400HP. This car will basically compete in price and performance with the Porche 911 Turbo. I don't know how reliable this informaion is.
