thanks again for staying on top of this event, ken. i'm really looking forward to gerry's turbo setup.

by the way, anyone heard from chris? (ciaoboy) he mentioned about doing this turbo setup.....

I called up CARB and here's the deal. Referee centers won't pass your car if it has mods which aren't CARB-certified. So in that manner, they are no different than regular smog centers.

Hence, I am looking for a CARB-legal forced induction kit. I got some basic info from CARB about how a maker applies for CARB-certification and forwaded that info to Gerry. It's up to him to mail a letter to CARB, describing his product. It sounds like turbocharging is better than supercharging, so ideally I'd like to go with Gerry's kit. I've offered my car as a test bed to him if he wants to make an official kit that CARB will certify.

Unfortunately, I read in the latest issue of Sport Compact Car that CARB certification is a lengthy and expensive process. So stay tuned...

no wonder so many of these FI systems aren't CARB-certified. they must justify the revenue before spending $$$ on certification....how much is this anyways?

chris, keep us posted on your project now that brian has moved down to s. cal. you're the most probable candidate in our group at this point for gerry's turbo. :)

brian agreed to give me a ride but now i'll just have to wait.....

Sport Compact Car said it could cost as much as $6k. CARB will contact Gerry after he sends in his letter. Only then will we know how much the actual cost will be.

i see.....therefore, in order to justify this,

he needs to sell 6 systems ($1k profit) to break even or
3 systems ($2k profit) and etc.....

do you know how many he has sold up to date? prototypes, i assume.

I don't know how many custom jobs he has done so far. But I'm sure he will sell a lot more if his kit is CARB-certified. That's why I'm encouraging him to go through the process.

by the way, are you working with ken on getting us a visit to gerry's shop.

it's been a week and i haven't heard anything yet.

are you there, ken? have you heard back on gerry's schedule?

for those that have installed FI kits not yet CARB legal, how do they pass smog tests??? is there a way around it? if not, what's the solution?

"500th post":D

They have a few options: remove the kit before inspection and reinstall the kit after inspection, grease the inspector, or register the car in a state other than CA.

wow...i don't think any one of those methods are practical.....

but i guess some are willing to accept this to have a little more fun.
