America's reputation...according to BBC poll

Well, it does look nice in the brochures. j/k

At least most of us seem to like us and a minority of us like our president.

I'd like to see the same poll about each of the other countries whose participants were surveyed. I bet people give French food better marks than Jordanian food, but don't look for a lot of respect for French military prowess.

Of course, you know what they say: "Heaven is where the police are British, the cooks are French, the mechanics are German, the lovers are Italian and it's all organized by the Swiss. Hell is where the police are German, the cooks are English, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, and it's all organized by the Italians." :D

You have to realize that each of these countries have very different population count. Brazil and Indonesia both have huge populations which many are uneducated and have never left their own country in their lives.

Brazil - 186 Million
Indonesia - 240 Million

I only say this to compare the average quality of life between a French or Austrailian person is going to be a lot different than those in Brazil or Indonesia.

Speaking of France, I was just there 2 weeks ago... yes, they are very very arrogant. I'd say the feeling is heavy nationalism, isolationism, and infeiority complex.

The French... ....my grandfather and his brother landed on the beach at Normandy to get France back from the Nazis..my Grandfather's brother died there, helping those Ungrateful whiners,,The French can bite my A$$....

Consider the source. The BBC is not the most American friendly news organization in the world. Years ago the BBC was a wonderful source of news from around the world. In the past few years, it has been plagued with corruption, false reporting, bias reporting, etc.. Remember the trials in London surrounding their corrupt reporting?

Also, I have lived and worked in places like Jordan. Those people could not have been nicer to me. When I worked in the Middle East, people went out of their way to make me feel comfortable.

None of those results are very suprising though... There's no doubt for improvement here at home, but there is no one to blame but yourself if you import and assimilate another countrys' culture. Japanese have been assimilating and adapting to cultures all the time, yet they still maintain identity and productivity.

In Q14, 41% of Israelis feel that our economic policies toward them have no effect or make them poorer. Have they been living under a rock all these years?! Their country gets tens of billions of our money every year, multi-million dollar fighter jets, military training (jee, their air force is ranked 2nd in the world, what a surprise), and who knows what else.

BBC not reporting truthfully....or the newspapers over here selectively BSing us. Hmmmm

Not many people know the above fact. Your right on !!! BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of dollars to Israel each year !! (so basically we (taxpayers) send an average of $15,000 for each individual Israeli each year !!) while we cut funding programs for science, education, veterans, the poor, the elderly, etc....... But we never cut the funding of billions of dollars, weapons etc to Israel !!!

These countries polled and many others countries, see things in a different perspective. Its hard to understand ,unless your on the outside looking in, because when you do so, you are not biast. You also have to know, that these polls make it sound that these people in these countries dislike us. They dont dislike the american people, infact they welcome american movies, music, food, fashion etc..... They dislike the political policies of those in power. Even in this country, the majority of us dislike that we were misled, lied to, by certain people in power.

By the way, regarding jordan, it has very gracious and generous people. It also has many ancient and magnificient sites like petra, roman ruins, the dead sea...etc.. etc. that people enjoy visiting. Infact ask any american that has been there, once you mention that your an american, in many cases they will treat you better then their own local citizens....

The american public and even many of the french people are appreciative of what the veterans did and do, no matter how many with special interest to try to make it seem like they dont like the american people.

By nature, humans are generally good hearted, caring beings whether they are americans, jordanian, french, arabic, swiss, african, asian , etc..so .we should not be misled by the few (and specially those in power) who are trying to convince us otherwise.

Please provide the tech to back up this statement.

6,276,883 x $15,000 = $94,153,245,000

I always wondered why the Israelis didn’t spend a sizable chunk of that money on building schools, roads, hospitals and businesses etc for their Palestinian brothers and neighbours.
If they had started doing that 20 years ago instead of spending it all on tanks, they all would be best buddies now and the US wouldn’t be perceived as supporting aggressors. The US ratings would certainly be sky high.
But every time an Israeli tank drives over a Palestinian house, everybody sees the little “Made in the USA” sticker on the side.
Otherwise the rest of the survey hints at a basis for admiration for the US. I can tell you, living in Europe as I do, the Europeans, including the French, would just love to like the US.
Well, the world is getting smaller so maybe things will improve.

A quick search of 'net citings of approximately that figure shows that it is the cumulative total that the United States has provided to Israel since 1949, NOT every year, and a good chunk of that consists of loan guarantees which were not actually transfers of funds. The level of aid to Israel has been approximately $3 billion each year for many years. That amounts to $478 for each Israeli.

Wait a minute!! are you serious?....you seem to be forgetting a major issue and why the Palestinians and the Israelis started fighting in the first place....RELIGION....the both want to build their temples on the same piece of land!.....until somebody gives in ..which doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon...they will be fighting....they can never be "best buddies" as long as this land issue exists...

Muslims, Christians and Jews (among others) have had their temples, and other religious sites all mixed in between each other there for thousands of years (well, one form or another of Muslims, Christians and Jews, they weren’t called that then) . Why are one group trying to take over now? Because they are awash with money and they let it go to their head.

Guess whose money?

I agree with you about peace not happening anytime soon. Once one party wrongs another, the grudge lasts a long time with us humans. They should have been more wise. Too late now.

Zahntech, do you have good relations with your neighbour? When you moved there, did you move the fence over. And keep moving it?
No. Because you are wise (you own an NSX after all:smile: ) and being friendly with the neighbours is important for your and everybody’s comfort.
It’s clear the Israelis are not comfortable. I just think they have been unwise with all the aid and loans etc they have had over the years. It’s a pity. And I believe that this neighbourhood dispute has been blindly fuelled by US money. Now its spread all over the neighbourhood (=world).
I’ll bet that if Israel had helped their neighbours in the last 20 years instead of having confrontation with them, the Arab world might even had not paid so much attention to the invasion of Iraq! It’s a complex situation though, so who knows. In any case the Twin Towers would still be standing.
Back to the thread:
I’d bet the results of the poll would have been much better if there had not been such a conflict in Israel/Palestine, but I guess that’s obvious.

>>>> you got half the story right... The Land part....
" the part about both wanting to build their temples on the same piece of land is not exactly right" ..Muslims already have a temple that has been there a long time for called the " dome of the rock ", and jews have their western wall, as well as other sites, that is secondary. Its about Land first, and land confiscation, and about taken land away from the native, and building settlements on it and claiming it yours. This has been an ongoing process for over 50 years.

Here, this will help you understand things better:

and if you dont feel like reading specially the part post 1904.....

710 did a good job of pretty much summarizing it in generic simple terms.
