Amazing NSX Story (to me anyhow) Advice Needed

I think he's a fool, but a nice fool.

I enjoyed your story though.

Trust me, this man is no fool.
He bought this car many years ago, without much thought as to what it truly was, kept it, driving less than 2,000 miles a year, maintained it the way a normal non-enthusiast owner of such a thing might maintain a car (adequately, but not obsessively) and was never an active member in a "community" on car owners.

He bought it for the sheer look/performance/rarity.
He doesn't follow car pricing, he see's one he likes, and either buys it, or doesn't. Generally, he daily drives Lexus SUV's that he leases for business reasons. He is just uninformed on the value of what he owns. Not really that uncommon, in my experience.

I'm not just speaking about pricing. It's very nice that he allows you to borrow his car, but in a world that so letigious, if something goes wrong, he may have quite a bit of legal trouble on his hands. If he was really smart and wanted to be nice, he should put the title of the car in an LLC, and then let you take it whenever you want. That way he personally is shielded from any problems down the road.

I personally would not feel comfortable as the receiver of such a gift. I wouldn't want to either subject the gifter to legal problems or have an accident in something that's not my own. Just my thoughts...

I'd also be troubled by this:

Why is a person who has never let anyone drive his car unsupervised suddenly let a person he's known for 3 days take out his pristine 25k mile 15 year old supercar?
You should ask yourself again if this makes sense. Make sure you are not being obligated to something down the road. Just doesn't seem right, but maybe he truly doesn't have other motives. Very strange though.

Is that a FART CAN on the back of that Supra!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking that possibly after many years, the novelty, and joy of the car have worn off for him. We discussed it briefly tonight, and I told him that I wanted to do some things to the car (detail it, and maybe Surflex the seats, to get the wear to a minimum) but I was more comfortable with taking the car out with him.

Truthfully, I am very grateful for the chance to get to know this car, and I will continue to see it, and him for the next few months, as I will be at his house doing various Home Theater, and Automation related things, but I don't really think I'll be driving the NSX alone too much.

I do, however, like my idea of parking the NSX, and Integra side by side, to attract attention to the FOR SALE Integra.

Yes it is. It farts for about 9 seconds at a time.
It's a Tanabe RM, I believe... I just remember after the cam install, listening to the turbo spool down in it, on throttle lift... then WOT, it's kinda loud, then rev limiter once, then shotgun blast.

I had a thought last night about why so many people seem to have a problem with this. Granted, there are legal concerns, but we have gone over those already. I think that most people on here have trouble understanding this and suspect 'foul play' because many high end car owners are uptight about their cars and do not let others drive them, let alone borrow them. Many people just cannot understand that line of thinking. I am sure that will probably make some people upset that I said that, but it is true. Everybody has their way with their car, which is all cool.....there are just different ways of sharing that car. ;)

Yeah, the first hit is free, but after that, it's gonna cost ya.

Mitch, I'd prolly agree with you, but you've gotta admit, it's awfully strange, for a guy who's NEVER let someone drive his NSX unsupervised, all of a sudden just give the car to some total stranger after 3 days of working with that person.

I don't care if it's an NSX, or a Toyota Corolla. That change of character seems really strange, wouldn't you agree?

If the guy has let tons of other people drive his car (say Corolla), and gave everyone a key to the car and garage, I'd say it's a bit careless, but ok. But this is like the Twilight Zone strange. I think there's something missing from the story that we and maybe the OP doesn't know about. Or maybe like the lottery, the OP has hit the one odd that truly is as wonderful as it sounds. In that case I hope he goes out and buys a lottery ticket as well. :)

Congrats. I think you sound truly mature and responsible about this. Enjoy it, and for your protection, don't abuse it. :)

on a side not... how in the hell am I going to cure this NSX addiction I've now developed? I think if he offers to sell me the car for anything sub $30k, I'm going to have a third Acura.

I went through the classified's, and printed off a copy of every NSX for sale, in his year range, and showed him what cars like his were going for, and told him that if he were truly interested in selling it, I would be interested... so we'll see how that goes.

Personally, I think this guy has about the best sales tactic I can think of! People who drive NSXs buy NSXs. I let a longtime friend borrow mine for a few hours last year. Guess who is now NSX shopping?

Well, lets see, based on my experiences:
1. Polar drove my car, crashed his, couldn't be better timing, guess what he bought?
2. I didn't know if I'm sure wants a nsx, onetime the famed local high-end used car lot had one and I took a test drive for it... That's it, for the next 6 months, I've been searching for the right one like crazy.
3. My dad thinks it's good, only excuse he had is that he doesn't need 3 cars and he wants to keep his 3000GT, 4WD (in case it snows), + low resale value.. (keep it instead selling it)
4. My mom hates sitting in sports cars, she doesn't mind sit in mine and somehow she doesn't get scare either.
