alternative oil filters

I'm a little at a loss here...

Why would I want to use a diffent oil filter than OEM.
How much does the OEM filter in the US cost? Somewhere between 10-20 US$ I guess.
Why would I skip on OEM on such in INexpensive part that is doing such an important part on our car??

The oil I put in there is already 3 times more expensive than the oil filter itself.

I pick my oil filters not on price, but on MPE and SPE ratings.

To my knowledge, Honda doesn't provide them. Honda (like most OEM) are paper filter, not the syntehtic media that you see in K&N, mobil1, Puralator, Bosch and even the high end Frams like Tough Guard filters.

I've never used OEM filters for any of my cars for that reason.

Same for fluids.

Aftermarket fluids are superior to OEM fluids. But that's a whole other topic that I've chatted up......

Forget JDM OEM $10 filter....go with the USDM bomb....$100 filter must be better....that is Canton Connecticut not Canton China...ftw

From their website:
CM elements filter out particles down to 8 microns, half the size of what the average spin-on filter can do, and have a flow rate that is far greater than that required by any automotive application even when contaminated. Depth filtration extends filter element life because it can catch more contaminates without restricting flow. CM filters' longevity make them a natural match for use with longer lasting synthetic oils.

DOes anyone know why an OEM filter is better

Let's skip an answer to that and the subsequent pseudo technical beat down.

Cut to the chase so you can tell everyone what you think is best

You know you want to

SEE? Start a thread keep it spinning until you finally get to what you wanted to pontificate about right from the start.:biggrin:

You want us to know what you think is the best filter and oil for the NSX and since no one will ask you, you ask the question so you can answer it.:biggrin::biggrin:

It's all cool, just cut to the chase.

dayummm, i knew alot of oil filters came from the same factory. but some of the differences are crazy. but since they are all paper, what is the difference? what would the glue do? nothing. if it works it works.

I am sure any premium brand filters will be fine for 3k to 5k miles. Both the oil and filters have improved quite a bit since the NSX came out over 20 years ago.

It was interesting to see some tall OEM filters went for almost $30 each.... Is it collector item now?

The new 'short' NSX filter has barely more surface area than a 1.6-1.8L miata's filter!

I'm meaning to check out to see if Purolator has a taller near (original) stock filter application for the NSX for more surface area.

Like WIX and the original Honda filter, the Purolator has the metal end caps, decent spring and nice rubber drain-back valve. It would be a good alternative IMO, especially if it's tall.

Question - Will a brand X filter made for a Legend fit the NSX? If so, what year range Legend?

Billy, the Purolator L24484 filter fits the Legend as well as the NSX. The two cars run the same filter. It is similar in size to the larger NSX filter. I've always run these on both of my ('94) Legends for the past 12 years. The Legend ('88 - '95) originally ran the exact larger OEM filter that the NSX ran until Acura superseded the part number with the one for the smaller filter (which is the same thing that they did to the NSX later).

Awesome. So the L24484 is the spec for the 88-95 Legend (and fits all year NSXs)?

I cut apart the smaller Honda filter and was surprised how little surface area there was. I will get a L24484 and cut that open to see how it compares and post my findings.

Yes, the L24484 is essentially the fitment/size equivalent of Honda's larger 15400-PL2-004 filter. It fits the C27a, C30a, C32a and C32b.

L24484 is the BEST oil filter made for the NSX that I know so far.
