$160/$69.99 = 2.286

69.99-$20 (coupon) =49.99

49.99*3=149.97

Wow! I'm familiar with mounting/balancing prices, at dealers and elsewhere, all over the country, and sorry, that doesn't sound right. I've never heard of a place that charges more than $40/tire (and even that is already at least twice as much or more than the typical $15-20/tire). Are you sure that isn't $60 for all four tires?

I am positive. I asked almost 5 times just to make sure they were quoting me the right price. $240 dollars to mount 4 tires. I thought it was extremely high but that is what they charge.

Just so you know that last post about the $240.00 to mount and balance 4 tires is not off: Our local Honda ATV dealer charges $50.00 per tire to mount one on your ATV (and these are not even balanced!), so $200.00 to mount a new set of tires (that may have only cost you $160.00 to buy for the set if you go them from me). Contrary to popular belief (at least among tire dealers) I feel ATV tires are far easier than most car tires (especially low profile ones like are on some of our cars). I charge $7.50 to swap an ATV tire in my shop, and feel it is a fair price for both parties. The next lowest price among ATV dealers in my area is $26.00 per tire, so I could charge 3 times what I currently do and still be the cheapest in town among ATV dealers, but my gut says sticking it to your customer needlessly will only cost you future sales. BTW, if a customer buys wheels and tires from me I mount the tires for free (even though I am giving away an amount equal to 75% of the profit on the wheels by doing so). I think there is a lot of needless cash-grabbing by people these days.

Needless cash grabbing. I like that:biggrin: .

Sad but true. I am sure some people will laugh when they read this (thinking what a simpleton I am), but I see no need to get rich off every person who phones me up or walks through the door. I can honestly say I will show my cost on any item I sell with no remorse or guilt about what I charge for it. We have to make a profit to stat in business, and I make no apologies for that. However, we do not have to hand you a jar of Vaseline with each purchase (if you get my drift).
One of my competitors actually charges 10% over MSRP for parts, which I think would be a sure sign that no one would go there, but ignorance is bliss. Now if I had a dollar for every person who said "i'll never go there again" once they figured this out...

Schumdit,

We need more retailers like you some people are so near sighted when it comes to owning a business. They think that if they have high prices they will make a lot of money in the fact that they have a high profit return on a single item. However most buyers aren't blind or stupid and do research prior to buying things, when they compare prices they will just move on. What business have to realize is that they are now competing with the internet, so you have to keep your price competitive, I understand it being more than the interenet but your additional interaction and knowledge base should be why people pay you the extra amount. I think its better to have less profit and deal with high volume, word of mouth is excellent for a business and if you are a helpful and well priced retailer, even if you cost more than the internet people will continue to take their business to you and recommend you to their friends.

I just switched my tires back to summer tires, and I've been visiting garages this whole morning trying to get someone to align my NSX. I can't believe these people. This has turned out to be a ROYAL pain in the ass. And I refuse to take the car to the dealership by me because those guys will never see a cent of my money.

First garage:
Me: How much is an alignment?
Guy: Well...for YOUR car its $100.
Me: K THX BYE!

Second Garage:
Me: How much is an alignment?
Guy: Well its 69.99 but I won't be able to get your car on the rack cause its too low.
Me: Allright, thanks. (At least these guys were honest)

Third Garage: (These guys didn't see my car when I drove up)
Me: How much is an alignment?
Guy: 69.99.
Me: Great, can you get me in now?
Guy:Sure thing....
...so I pull the car up by the garage door.....
Guy: Oh wait a minute! I'm going to have to charge you $160 for the alignment!
Me: What? Why?
Guy: Well because that's one of those NSX's!
Me: So?
Guy: Well its got all kinds of gizmos on it that regular cars don't.
Me: (truly disgusted) Yea? Like what?
Guy: Well see we got to adjust the camber caster AND toe on that one!
Me: Well don't you do that on most cars?
Guy: Um, well yea, but see here, it's different. You know, its just different.
Me: So what you're saying is that you can't really explain why you're trying to charge me three times more than your posted price?
Guy: Well i'd try to explain it but you probably wouldn't......
This is when I gave him back his service order and left.

Ugh...anyone else have problems like this?

Yes...it drives me nuts. I called a Firestone tire place to get my tires balanced and they gave me a price of $20 and set an appointment. I take off from work early, go there, wait, and then have the tool say, 'Oh...we cannot get your car in here, and IF we could it would be $80', I almost lost it.

Me - 'Why can't you do it now?'
Tool - 'Well....umm...that is an NSX.'
Me - 'Yeah...and???'
Tool - 'Well it just won't fit in here.'
Me - 'So you never do low cars at a big place like this?'
Tool - 'Well...we do 'Vette's and stuff.'
Me - 'This would have been geat to know ahead of time,'
Tool 'Ummm...well....yeah.'
Me - 'Nevermind. Thanks.'

Simply ASK what kind of car it is and this could be avoided ON THE PHONE and save me the wasted time....ARGH!!

Plus, I have had the same problem with alignments. Prices going from $69.99 to $250 once they look at my car...I swear these people should get beat down.

Is that what mechanical engineers do?

Products and services are generally sold at whatever price the market will bear.

I like the phrase "needless cash grabbing".
It just sounds funny when you say it.

Yes you are correct but the market is changing quite dynamically with retail products because of the internet. As for your business well thats tough to do over the interenet so you are very correct when you state that services are generally sold at whatever price the market will bear.

As for mechanical engineering, I consider it charity work:biggrin: do I hear tax refund:biggrin:
