*ALERT* Stolen Car!!!

the car only had 10 miles??? hmm....sounds to me like the thief may be a listener on prime. they read the red alert lookout and was afraid to drive it knowing that anyone on the street may recognize the car and report it. the description was indeed detailed and unless they drive with ski masks on, i'm sure witnesses will remember their faces.....or if they're driving at 150+mph, but the 10 miles would end pretty quickly.

Sounds like a joy ride. But only 10 miles? That part doesn't make much sense to me. I guess it could of been worse, right?

... the Thief, experiencing an overwhelming sense of guilt, pulls the car over, sobbing quietly. "What have I done?!", he cries out to the lush, perfect interior. "I'll just be taking these cd's, rolex , monte blanc pens, oh.. and this cb and be on my way to rehabilitation."

right on.....if he thinks this far, he's already past rehab.....

sounds to me like he's another sucker to those internet business scams....ready to sell on ebay!

I hope they catch those bastards. What a travesty. Hope to hear an update on the car. Were they able to get any prints from the vehicle?

The best reality shows are on Prime!

Sometimes I don't get thieves. They go to a whole lot of trouble for what seems like little to no reward. The only time I had a car broken into, they simply smashed the window and nothing more.

Still eager to hear directly from Vince...and to learn the outcome of the inspections

Sorry for keeping you all waiting. I just didn't have the time yesterday to write and post all the details. I did have a brief conversation with John this morning so he did get some of those out to you all.

Essentially this is what happened. The thieves broke into the car by taking a screwdriver and just punching out the door lock. They then went into the car, I'm assuming (or rather hoping) that the alarm went off. They tried the same maneuver on the ignition switch with the screwdriver but since I have starter kill, etc. that probably didn't work. At which point they went under the steering column, ripped things out and somehow managed to hotwire the car. Not quite sure how they got that to happen but it did. They then drove it not that far and later ditched the car just a couple blocks from where it was stolen. It just sat there quietly for a day or two before being found by the police, but not before receiving a parking ticket. They apparently backed into a car or two resulting in slight damage to the rear bumper and may have brushed a curb, scratching the front bumper a little bit. They then proceeded to cover the entire car in some sort of grease or oil to kill any chance of fingerprints. They likewise sprayed the interior with leather cleaner for the same purpose. They seemed pretty professional to me and at least I got to thank them for not damaging anything purely out of malice and just stealing the stupid shit. I can't really fathom their reason for stealing the car though. Seems like a bunch of kleptos or perhaps they stole it and then decided they didn't want it or it wasn't the right version. <shrug> Who knows...

Anyhow, insurance is now going to do an investigation on the condition of the car and I need to have it sent to a bodyshop to have it repaired so that it is driveable. Then I have to get the security redone so it is more effective. I was thinking of getting a security system that incorporates small nozzles that surround the car and shoot out mace/pepper spray when the alarm is tripped. =P If only that were legal.

Anybody know of a good repair/bodyshop in Santa Monica that I can take my car too?

Whew! Thank goodness you were able to get it back (you did want it back, didn't you?).

Like you said, you are lucky that they didn't do really serious damage (non readily detectable anyway). I'd have that car checked inside and out.

BTW, does this mean the car will have "theft recovery" branded on record? Just wondering.

Here are some pictures of the car after I regained possession.

I'm not sure about the theft recovery on the record but frankly, I don't really care. I was planning on keeping the car forever. =)

I'm glad that things aren't as bad a they could have been under the circumstances, Darkcyd. It is, however, painful to take the NSX to the shop for any reason, and I can therefore understand the bitter-sweet feelings you must be experiencing right now. I wish you the best of luck in the repair process, and hope that both the repair and the reimbursement issues are addressed smoothly and expediently.

I'd be curious to know the answer to this as well.

Regards.

So it sat in the impound yard for how long before you were contacted?

I was going to suggest calling some. I found my slantnose 911 (stripped) at one a few days after it was stolen. Who knows how long it would have taken the police to contact me, if ever.

Looks like not too much damage. Glad you got it back.

Darkcyd,

I'm glad that it turned out ok for you. Fromthe pics, it doesn't look like any major visible damages on the aluminum panels.

I hope you can nurse it back to its original condition in time for the Prime Canyon Run.

I don't think they'll change it into a thieve recovered status. You still have the title right? If the insurance company were to auction it out, then it may be a different story. Since there is police record, Carfax may show up in their record in the future. Never mind all that.

Time to make it into an even better car than before. Good luck!

:)

That's kinda weird. Who carries leather cleaner around with them when they're stealing cars. Its really kinda strange too that they didn't drive it far. Probably spent more time breaking in and hot wiring than actually driving it.

i'm thankfull it was found and no major damage. As for you, with time the "cooties" will wear off!I'd like to know from our experts, how they could get the engine to fire by crossing wires with a kill switch on board.?

That's really really weird... makes me wonder if:
1) they didn't steal it hoping to take swap parts off it?
2) they didn't use the vehicle in another criminal activity?
3) They were doing a boost, and they thought it was a ferrari :p

Amazing it wasn't stripped down in the time they ditched it and when the police recovered it.

Glad to hear you got the car back... hope you make it even better (and secure) than before!!! :)

To Darkcyd

Glad you got you car back. Who's your regular mechanic? I live in West LA and hopefully will be driving an NSX in the not too distant future.

SoCalDude- Use John & Patrick at Acura of South Bay in Torrance. These guys are great NSX certified mechanics and both drive NSX's as well

Why the hell was it sprayed in oil? I mean, all over?!! Surely they knew which bits of the car they touched, like around the locks etc. I think they had some kind of sexual perversion, and must of rubbed themselves all over your sexy car for their own sick pleasue!

I'm sure here, that a car is marked as stolen recovered if the car is found after the insurance has paid out to the owner, and hence belongs to the insurance company, which sells it on. In which case a car will either be a stolen/recovered or a accident write-off. Something has to be recorded.

I saw a program on TV a while back talking about car security. Unfortunately they showed an NSX being broken into. It took 30 seconds to unlock the door without damaging anything. The TVs complaint was that a £70k car should have better door locks.

I am in the security business and can offer NSX owners a GPS recovery system that is easy to install and affordable at less than $500. With this unit, you can go to the internet or phone and find your car typically in about 1 minute.

My website, www.buzz-off.com has some info about vehicle security. You can feel free to call me for more info at (813)882-8477.
