Does anyone have one of the various CF engine
covers? I am interested in the product from
SOS with the wide black grill opening. How's it look? How much increase in cabin noise ?.
Will also be running CT exhaust. Thanks.
I have had the Cantrell Concepts wide engine cover with mesh and narrow with lexan. The mesh covers, like the NSX-R cover, will increase cabin sound, but not much. I can still talk on a cell phone with the mesh cover. The lexan cover allows a little less engine note through.
In my opinion, the covers INCREASE in-cabin pleasure
Soichiro,
did you remove the engine cover completely without replacing with a "cutted" one?
I am asking this because I was told that you would have some rattling since without the engine cover the rubber material would miss. Is this true?
I had my engine cover completely removed for a long time, without encountering any problems, nor any rattles. However, you have to be very careful when lowering the glass. I now have a mesh cover. Either makes the same amount of noise, which is barely louder than the stock engine cover.
Much better this way also! I'll try to remove it on the weekend to test for one week if it sounds too loud for my taste and if not I'll work out something for a meshed/lexan one!
My car is adaily driver and it would annoy me to have it much louder inside the cabin than it is now (remus exhaust & RM intake)...
You should replace the white plastic coolant expansion tank with an aluminum one, if only for looks. Get any steam after driving though any standing water?

No steam, but i do get a lot of moisture in the mornings on the inside of the hatch, but then mine is parked outside, summer and winter. I have a DIY mesh cover.
The molding serves three purposes that I can think of:
1. seals the glass and keeps the elements from out of the engine
2. provides cushioning when the glass is lowered. With out the molding, it would be possible to lower the glass too quickly, cracking it if one was not careful.
3. properly aligns striker pin with latch
When I had my car w/o a cover, there was no apparent rattles, though, I did notice that the hatch 'floated' slightly as it was lower than with the rubber.
I tried today to remove it and I think that this may be another difference between USD and Euro model... my glass sat 1-2 cm lower without the engine cover and it rattled/squeeked in a dangerous way when driving the car. I reinstalled it immediately...

It's because of the removal of the rubber molding, as Chris describes. That's not a difference between USDM and Euro. Both models are identical in that respect.

Sorry, I couldn't resist !
Go with the mesh or lexan cover ! I have no rattle problem with my "DutchBlackNsx Replica" mesh cover !

I have my cover off but no rattles here. What you can do is buy a pair of 1/2 inch rubber pieces(bought from Home Depot stores) and screw it on the corners of the body. It will fill the gap between the glass hatch and the body.
