...I was driving home from Don Gallo's River Run on Saturday and I got to a traffic light and put my 5sp in neutral. As the light was turning green, I tried to shift into 1st and it would not go in. It seemed to get about 1/2 way into first, but would not get all the way. I decided to try and slowly let the clutch out, and it grinded. I tried shifting into 2nd, then first and that did not work the first time. Eventually, it did go into first and I did not have another problem.

Once in a while shifting into 3rd will feel a little rough, but never grind. And somtimes there is a little resistance (minimal) shifting into some gears (random 1st, 2nd, etc..) Just figured it was a fluke because it rarely happens.

Is this a sign of a clutch that is going? I think I may be in the snap ring range, could it be a sign of that? I was told a couple years ago that my clutch may be going, but don't drive enough to have put much additional wear on it.

Any input would be appreciated.

sounds like

snap ring

but i could be wrong.. check your tranny number i guess.

good luck

Check the shifter linkage and cables where they go into the front of the transmision. The issue you are describing sounds more like engagement problems than clutch problems to me. If you look in the manual you will get a good idea of how parts set up and how to check adjustment.

Do follow VBNSX's advice and check for the snap ring #.

54k

Car has 54k and I am assuming clutch is original. I purchased several years ago and have not replaced clutch.

I was leaning towards clutch on this, and have my fingers crossed that it is not snap ring problem.

Thanks
