I followed the instructions as best I could when re-filling my engine coolant the other day. I made sure there was coolant coming out of each of the 4 spots before tightening them. The start-up and idled until warm and everything seemed to work perfectly as far as engine temp and radiator fan coming on and the heater was working.
In a road test last night, coolant temp seemed fine. But, soon as I got back home, and let it idle in the garage while I looked for leaks, the temp started to climb. I noticed that the radiator fan was not on even though the temp was really high. I then shut down the engine and let it cool.
I started to check the radiator fan resistor and the power to the radiator fan. But then I thought I'd re-check my job of bleeding the coolant system.
Here is the good part for anyone attempting to re-fill the coolant. My coolant didn't flow out of all the bleed areas in order. The thermostat housing was first, but the radiator bleed plug was not 2nd (it was 3rd). The heater core inlet pipe was 2nd. The large coolant pipe was last. I'm not sure if this indicates a problem or an incomplete bleed job or not.
Last night I noticed that the coolant in the tank was sucked down to the lower hose level - maybe farther. I slowly opened the pressure cap and about 1/2" of expansion and back flow filled it up some - but still way below the max fill line.
I then re-bled in order. For each one, as I loosened them, a little fluid would come out, but not a steady stream. After a few seconds, THEN the steady stream would gush out.
I repeated this for each one and had to add more coolant before the next as the level kept going down.
Finally, when I thought I was done the other day, I had only put in 3 gallons and then maybe 1/4 of the next gallon. Now that I have re-bled and added a bunch more, I've probably put in 3 and 5/6 gallons of coolant. Keep this in mind when re-filling your system.
I hope this helps.
