It’s not as much parts that you have to worry about. It’s customer support when there is a major problem with the car. There are a few very good NSX techs out there, but if one is not local to you that should be taken into consideration if you want to own this car. There’s also the fact that Acura isn’t offering an extended warranty from what I’ve been told.
I wish I shared the same enthusiasm. Honda had a shot with the NC1 to start making competitive engines north of 320 hp. They didn’t do too well at that, so I highly doubt they will ever step out of the “season of performance” and continue making their 300 hp toys they know how to make.
You can still get 99% of the parts for the Gen 1, well, at the prices Honda is asking, if not in the US then in Japan and the Gen 1 is now 29 year old. I was worried since 10 years about parts availability but now I'm quite confident for the next 10 years. The parts are so expensive that Honda has an incentive to supply them at least.
What's the actual production no. of the Gen 2? Did they slow it down?
I would take the promise of 25 years of support with a grain of salt. Honda left NA1 owners in the lurch sooner than that even though it was produced in greater quantities. My NA1 was only 22 years old when it needed a part that is no longer available. 2005 cars were only 12 years old when the part in question became unavailable (the part is common to both NA1 and NA2 series).
These can be rebuilt by a shop or DIY as seen here on this site recently.
80151-SL0-A01 is available in Japan, at least they show a price for it.
In the recent years, my experience was that some of the parts might be discontinued in Europe (or the dealer is too lazy) or in the US (good customer service) but you could get them in Japan. Honda seems to say in analogy of the US president 'NSX: Japan first'. Sometimes it takes longer to get the parts but I've had not a slngle part missing that the car needed to be kept on the road.

Well, a crash is a rare event and the fear of every car owner, I know. But it's not different from new cars. In fact, it takes less to total a NEW car nowadays. Actually, I'm not referring to the undesireable event of a crash where we all know that it could mean the end of the car's life in terms of $, I'm more referring to keeping a car on the road under 'normal' circumstances.
I don't know the full story but has really every source been checked for the fenders? While the owner might has the patient to wait for the next production batch the insureance company wants you to decide within a short period of time and that could impose a real problem. If you encounter a heavy crash you can't expect Honda to supply parts for 100 years. I'm just saying that the parts availability has been very good so far, in comparison to other makes and other Honda models.
On the other hand, it's just a car, get the money from the insurance and buy the next NSX or move on. I don't want to be disrespectful but on the other hand personal priorities and capabilites change over time. I know that the time will come where I'll part from the car or the car parts from me. That's life.
EDIT: Due to higher pricing of the Gen 1 we've seen many rebuilds. Some of these cars have been completly write-off formerly and would have remained as such if the price level didn't jump with QE so high. That's good for the parts production as there's a constant demand for them. But on the other hand it also restricts the 'make 1 out of 2' tactics.
The word in the past has been that the 2011 tsunami in Japan wiped out a large amount of Honda's NSX parts stock, creating some of the shortages noticed by owners in the years after.
Agree. There is really only one reason for the Gen 2 NSX to exist: to boost the Honda/Acura brand. As long as it breaks even financially or doesn't lose too much money, that's OK. Honda's reasonably profitable, they won't have nightmares about this car. Here's a terrific exotic car sales data web site:
Unfortunately the web site doesn't break down Porsche sales to comparable, for example, the 911 Turbo. But it does break down McLaren to the Sport series which is instructive. I'll hazard a guess for 2nd year sales collapse of the NSX: A majority of 2017 sales were leases. The leases ended. Many of the people who might lease a car like this move on to the new new thing after 1 or 2 years, whatever it is. That's how I just last Friday bought a used highly optioned 2017 with 6K miles for what I would call a rational price. Great for me, and does Acura/Honda care? Well they knew it would happen. They controlled the lease terms like they wanted, to get 'enough' of them out on the street the first year.
So the Gen 2 NSX is doing it's somewhat predictable thing. It's still a brand booster. I would predict Corporate will do minimal sensible refreshes and keep on until the sales are consistently too low and it stops making sense as a brand booster. How low is too low? Too low to provide any brand boost, whatever that may be. And, I predict they will never go head-to-head with Corvette, that would be dumb. It would lower the brand, not boost it. They are just using it to nudge public perceptions of Acura a bit upward.
You can source parts if you have months to wait and thousands of dollars to spend. For me, the price of parts versus the cost of what the cars value was, is a no brainer. I think some parts for the gen 1 are comparable to that of cars far above the 100k price range in a resale market. On that same note to beat people to the punch, a 2005 Nsx is not worth 100k
People crack me up. They buy a car like the NSX for a lot of reasons, and one of them is inevitably "exclusivity" or some variant of that characteristic. Then, they wring their hands with concern and worry that the manufacturer won't pump out more and more of the cars thus diminishing one of the core qualities they found desirable............hahahaha..........I have a '00 S2000.........I'm glad they stopped making it.........I just traded in my Gen V Viper for the NSX............I'm glad they stopped making it (I made a lot of money on that car)............I don't want Honda/Acura to sell more NSXs.........and I don't give a damn if they discontinue the car. I'll have mine, and that's all I care about. Am I worried that I won't be able to get it serviced/parts.......hahahahaha.........please...........worry about getting cancer, or getting hit by a bus when you cross the street tomorrow...........
