Ok, something seems to have gone wrong with my AC, now that i turn my AC on there seems to be some kind of loud rattle from the engine bay. after a bit idling like that the car will die. Anybody know what is wrong?

My guess - the bearings in your compressor seized and the load from the compressor is stalling your engine.

Take it to a trusted mechanic if you are not mechanically inclined and get the real deal but that is my "uneducated" guess...

Tobal,

Matteni is right on the money. I started my car up after the winter and it sounded like rocks in a polishing drum (or sneakers in the dryer:D). Turned it off quickly. Checked oil, checked for leaks, looked at everything I could think of. Restarted...lots of rattling but no CEL, no funny gauges. Towed it (one advantage to having a track day trailer) to the dealer. Diagnosis was AC compressor gone bad. Pulled the belt and now I am AC less, at least until I can pull the compressor off the track rat. Unfortunately the control module is acting up also.

Hang in there. You might be able to check on this board and with the recyclers for a used one that still works. Seriously - changing the alternator was harder/longer then the AC compressor. Jack the car up, single wire yellow wire from the top, 8 bolts (I think), and you are pretty much there. Someone from your neck of the woods should be able to pitch in and help you at least see if this is it.

At worst - I believe they are about $800 new in the box. At a minimum check with one of the heavy discounters in the FAQ section.

My AC compressor froze up on the freeway on my way to the NSXCA Spring Fling. The belt was gone in a cloud of smoke within 10 sec. I have priced out a complete replacement from Neillo with my 30% NSXCA discount it came out to about 650 for the compressor, clutch, clutch coil and receiver dryer.
