A few questions about my new '01.

1. Gas mileage seems quite lousy. I have only driven about 180 miles on this tank of gas and there is about 1/4 left. So that'll only be around 240/250 for the tank. Figuring I'll use about 16.5 gallons of the 18 it holds at this point; that's only about 15 mpg. Why so lousy? Is it possible that while it 'breaks in' that it would get this lousy mileage? It only has 1900 miles. Can I expect it to get better? My 91 got around 19 mpg.

2. What's the little square piece of plastic beneath the glove box?

3. Does anyone else notice a little hesitation/bucking when not warmed up?

4. Has anyone else inspected their paint thoroughly? I mean very closely. Curious about 00-01 owner's views.(esp. yellow owners) Do you have smooth edges everywhere? Do you notice kind of a lousy edge on the threshholds where the rocker panel meets the sill? Is the inside of the gas door painted with clear or is it just flat? Is the underside of the car around the rocker panels painted body color on your spa yellow?

Thanks for any help.

1) Gas milage will vary depending on driving patterns. However in most cases I do far better than you are. Usually 19-22, but lately its been far less due to high rpm driving :P

2) Hrm.. where exactly? There is a small piece just to the left under the glovebox, thats an air vent. I don't see any other small plastic pieces currently in my car.

3) I don't notice any hesitation, but as with most cars it dies idle in higher rpms until it warms up (ie: typical choke style warm up process) The rev limiter is of course in effect when the engine is cold .. ie: won't let you drive over roughly 5800rpms or so. The car also has an odd harmonic vibration at around 1300-1500rpms .. this is pretty common.

4) As far as paint goes, it should be smooth. If you see any dripping effects, especially on corners where body panels meet, chances are its been re-painted. The easiest way to identify a re-paint is flourescent lighting, look for discoloration or areas where it doesn't match. Another way is to run your finger along the seam where the paint would normally "drip" due to gravity. If there is any signs of paint dripping, chances are its been repainted.

Most manufacturers go through an extensive paint baking process when the car is built, which wouldn't leave any sort of "drip" appearance. Body shops, especially bad ones will have drippage and often overlook it at the seams and cracks.

Hope this helps...

You can't judge gas mileage from one partial tank. Maybe it wasn't full when you started out. Wait until you've driven on several tankfuls and average them before you get concerned.

Flat.

It was full and it's only going to get around 250 miles from the full tank. Is driving with the top off causing poor gas mileage? Is it that it is new? Hmmm.

I'm getting much better mileage in my '91. Wanna trade?

Two additional thoughts:

1. It might not have been absolutely full when you started the tank. Just a thought. More likely, ...

2. You said,

If you fill the car when the needle reaches "E", it only takes about 14.5 gallons. If you go 250 miles on those 14.5 gallons, that's about 17.25 mpg - not all that different from your previous 19 mpg.

Don't worry about it. Keep track of your fuel and miles over the next few tankfuls and let us know if it's closer to your previous mileage.

I'm surprised that you're even driving the car Todd!

We should have a little GTG, I'd love to see your new NSX.

I agree with nsxtasy...i think partly your calculations maybe off. Fill a full tank up, divide the milage driven since the fill up by the number of gallons you put back in.

The gas light usually comes on after 15.3 gallons have been used, so dividing by 16 (with 1/4) tank left is incorrect. You have 1/4 tank left not counting the reserve.

Nsxotic,

Mine is a '99 that I bought new in '99.

1. I get 23 mpg most of the time in combined city/hwy driving. Worst I've gotten is 19 with extra spirited driving.
2. Plug for OBD II
3. No hesitation, no bucking whatsoever.
4. I just finished the nth coat of Z2 followed by Z6 this morning and I inspected the paint thoroughly. Smooth edges everywhere. Perfect edges where the rocker panel meets the sill. The underside of the car around the rocker panels is yellow. The inside of the gas door is painted with clear.

I think the NSX has the best production paint of any car. It sure beats the paint on my neighbor's new P car.
