While I was driving to Dallas, I heard a loud "bang" and noticed that my ac was not cold. The "bang" came just as I turned on the ac unit. Ive been under the impression that the compressor was bad so I got a used one. Now Im wondering if maybe it could be something else. Does the compressor not engage if the coolant levels are too low? Could I have blown a line that I am not able to see? The belt for the compressor is still on and in great shape. I just wanted to see if anyone here on Prime can help me before I take it to the dealer and assume the position  It is a 91 with 155,XXX miles.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

BANG followed by a rush of gas, could be the high pressure relief valve or one of the O rings. Compressor clutch will not engage if freon level is low.

My guess is the compressor has seized on you which can potentially be a big problem. If you need a new compressor I remember reading the compressor for late model Acura Legends fits. You just have to make sure it is the same size displacement or larger.

Worst case scenerio is when the compressor seized it threw tiny bits of metal into the AC system.

Good luck

I just replaced my compressor this past weekend, and mine to was making like a grinding clattering sound when A/C was turned on and if I selected A/C off and just used the blower motor the sound would leave......If this is what your hearing then definetly its the compressor. I switched mine out and it was a full days work but well worth it, now my A/C is cranking so cold I have to turn it off :) .
