$50,000 paint job???

I'm not a paint guy, so maybe someone can educate me.

I can see putting down 14 coats of lacquer, but 14 coats of Chromalusion? I thought that was a urethane and they don't need that many coats. Maybe he did apply 14 coats of Chromalusion, and wound up spending $40k on just paint. That stuff is expensive.

It sounds like bunch of BS to me. All that money spent on the car and he won't spend a few hundred bucks to fix a "pencil hole?"
IMHO, the car is simply ugly and I don't remember Randy using this car to promote his company. NOTE the Comptech triangular strut bar and is clearly out of place for a RM company's car. Randy used his white 92 coupe and a black/white coupe as demos. Also, my previous 1997 white Targa(then owned by John Foster) which had all RM goodies and was featured on his catalog.

imagine getting insurance???

pity the body shop who has to quote on matching the paint, let alone do the work if the car gets into a bingle.

and 36 coats of paint? let's just add 20kg to the mass of the car!

in a word...

Over $195,000 in updates? Even with the listed updates cost shouldn't exceed $50,000.

Probably the labor to paint that many coats of chromallusion was $25,000

i recall an article from about 8-10 years ago in a car mag, about a specialty shop that did a minimum 10k paint job, and "standard" jobs were 75k and upwards...this of course included completely dissembling EVERY body peice on the car.

I'm confused...is the $50,000 needed to fix this thing up so it looks normal? You know maybe the paint job is really worth it. It could be one of the computer generated pictures that if you stare at it cross eyed for a while, you will see a dinosaur walking in a field. That would be kick ass.;)

That car has been listed by The Auto Toy Store in Florida/Dupont Registry for the last 3 1/2 years!! That ad is nothing but BS. RM had the white/red X and they were trying to get around 60 for it if I remember correctly. There are sooo many bogus cars for sale these days, I wish there was a way to alert potential buyers.

BTW, that is the ugliest Color change available:eek:
I've had several cars painted with Dupont Chromalusion and it definetly doesnt cost anywhere near that price.

Ive seen that car up close and it certainly had many minor flaws with some cracks around the front spoiler as well as the rear wing.I've also seen better chromo whatever paint jobs on civics.I saw the car 3 yrs ago at the toy store and then was told it was a 75k paint job!

Nothing but B.S...

B.S. B.S. This is nothing but B.S. I paint for a living and that paint job should not have cost more than $8000-$10000 and only if it was stripped down to bare metal. The Chromalusion paint is applied with a base of black and the Chromalusion color of choice on top. 3-5 coats of Chromalusion are all that are needed. then 3-5 coats of clear are sufficient for a sand and buff job. if they wanted to go one step further, after clearing they could have sanded the whole car with 400 or 600 and cleared again with 3 more coats. Then sand and buff for that show mirror finish. No way this is a $50k paint job.

Thats my 2 cents....

Wasn't there a factory refresh option avail. Something along the lines of sending the car back to Jap-Land to refinsh the original paint and interior?

That was advertised a while back at 10K US? So how does this guy think a 50K paint job?

I am very familiar with DuPont ChromaLusion.
It has excellent coverage, more so than standard colors ie., base/clear OEM colors. Dupont suggests 2-3 wets coats of base (ChromaLusion) to achieve best results. More will lessen the effect of the flop which is the whole point of this product.
With DuPont Chroma paints you want just enough to cover/hide the substrate. Multi layers of paint (very old school of thinking)diminish the quality and durability of the finish. Thick paint on a car looks crappy and tends to check, crack, craze, delaminate and have solvent pop among other problems.
In short, all the coats of paint that are suppposed to be on this car is not a good thing, in fact it couldn't have that much paint on the car. It would close the gaps on the panels!

I know of that car personally. It was bought new somewhere in the northeast (Vermont or Conn. I believe) and had the entire RM racing catalog installed on it. The owner did claim actually $60,000 for the paint job but that included a couple of repaints due to flaws. If I remember correctly the interior was pretty much stock when I saw it. The ride height also seemed a little high and I was told it was raised slightly due to poor road conditions where it was from. It sold at the Barrett Jackson auction that year, I believe in 2000, for $75,000. RM was showing it off shortly before the auction and they brought it to a Phoenix NSX club dyno day which is where I saw it and got the info from RM. RM racing sold it for the owner at the auction but RM did NOT own the car. I also recall it being for sale in Florida shortly thereafter.

There used to be much more including NOS systems etc. They have cut way back on NSX items since they now supply more for Ferrari, C5 Corvettes etc.

I wonder what color that car was originally? It would be a shame if it were Blue or White, as those were rare colors that year. This car is #122, and #121 is white I think.
