Hi Guys,

I am new here. I was just wondering if there are any people (in the land of Oz) who have installed the short gears in the <96 NSX? This is a mod I want to do but unsure of who could do the work down here.

Thanks!

gday Flight,
Welcome to NSX prime! There are a few us Aussies on this forum .. The question you've posted is something I've thought as well and not 100% sure cos there is Euro spec as well.

On another note I'll be driving down to Melbourne this weekend as some 3 NSX's from Prime are having the 1st Aussie NSX Prime cruise down GOR.

So I'll Pm the details if your interested.

Nico

Hi Chris,

Vik here (ordering taitec exhaust and headers from you).

I spoke to the local NSX dealer here. The gear ratios for a 96 5 speed are:

1. 3.071
2. 1.952
3. 1.400
4. 1.033
5. 0.771

I cannot find the original gear ratios in the FAQ, but they do not match the short gear set so I assume I do not have the short gears in my car - original, no mods.

I will try and confirm with road speed as you mentioned.

Any idea how many hours labour I am looking at here?

Thanks.

Sure dude. PM me - any excuse to drive the NSX.

It looks like you do have the short gears. Is your car an import or was it sold in Australia originally? You can find the US gears ratios here:

Cheers,

It was an australian import. Anyone have the ratios of the standard 5 speed?

Thanks again Chris. I will confirm via road speed tonight to see if I do indeed have them.

Here's how to tell if you have short gears:

In second gear, bring the revs to 4000 RPM and note your indicated speed: 40 mph means you have US (long) gears, 35 mph means you have Japanese (short) gears.

1. Click on the word FAQ in the red bar at the top of your screen, the one that looks like this:

2. Click on Technical Info.

3. Click on Gear Ratios.

Thanks for that. I found that just before. Don't ask me how I missed it...I was looking under the FAQ->Performance->Gears and could not find the data I needed. That is because it is in the section you mentioned ;)

University Education...$100,000

Common sense...priceless.

Oh BTW, the Aussie delivered NSX has short gears. This is a good thing. Still think 2nd is a little tall for our current, "fine-you-for-doing-62-in-a-60-zone".

I have been able to confirm that NO NSX delivered outside the JDM has the short gears.

This means us here in Australia as well guys. we have exactly the same gear ratios as the US and European delivered cars.

Sorry...

Not that bad Neo... It just means that there is still room for improvement for our "standard" NSX's ;)

I can't wait to get down to Melbourne. At this point in time it will be around the Australian GP time.

I am thinking of entering the GP rally. I'm just not sure which NSX to bring down...

It was going to be a surprise, but dippy forced me to spill the beans already... I am buying Cameron's ex Targa Tasmania twin turbo NSX! :D

So you will probably see a lot more of me in Melbourne as I will be getting AVO to maintain the vehicle for me.

In the meantime, I am looking at replacing my pristine '93 for a Black 97+ NSX-T with beige/ivory interior for a dedicated road car! I will have the TT for speed events so I don't mind the extra weight in the T-top for the street.

So, be on the lookout for one down there for me ok!

That's strange. Why did you find that out?

I rang a few dealers (not that they know anything ;) ) asking for the ratios for a 96 and they all gave me the short gear equivalents. Also did "Russ"'s 2nd gear 4000 rpm thing.

Oh AU_NSX, I just wanted to say how sorry I feel for you. You ONLY have two NSXs? I really feel for you...
:D

Congrats dude. Looking forward to seeing you in Melbourne. Dippy and I still have not managed to meet up, but it is coming up real soon. As soon as they release me from the office. :(

G'day Flight,

How did the extractor install go? Opps, sorry, wrong thread.. I'll ask you that in the proper one :o

Q 1. Is your car the 5spd or 6spd (A 96 should still be a 5spd)

Q 2. Do you know if your gearbox has been removed/rebuilt?

If yours is a 5spd, and if you still have your factory Owners Manual, It has the gear ratios (Maximum speed in each gear) quoted in that.

Try the 2nd gear (I'm not going to recommend trying the 3rd gear!) out to see if your speed matches that which is in your Owners Manual.

Check your owners manual with http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Technical/gearratios.htm
and see if yours corresponds to the US Spec or Japanese Spec.

Checked mine... Mine is the same spec as the US and European delivered vehicles.

Sorry it has taken me sooo long to reply, but I have just dug the info out...

Australian Delivered '93 NSX had the following maximum speeds in each gear:

1st = 72km/h (45mph)
2nd = 130km/h (81mph)
3rd = 182km/h (114mph)
4th = 231km/h (144mph)
5th = Top Speed

So yours is a '96 so maybe they changed which gearbox they imported into Australia by 1996.. Who knows?

Anyway, my Twin Turbo NSX is a JDM import so it has the short gears... I will be able to do a direct comparison for you when I bring it down...

Then it has the same gears as the North American and European versions, not the shorter 2nd through 4th gears of the JDM version.

In North America and Europe (and, possibly, Down Under), they used a slightly shorter second gear in '95-96. Not as short as the JDM version, but about one third of the way there from the '91-94:

2nd Gear Ratio / Speed at Redline:
'91-94 USM: 1.727 / 81 mph
'95-96 USM: 1.800 / 78 mph
'91-96 JDM: 1.952 / 73 mph

Thanks nsxtasy!

Of course when I said, "who knows" I should have known you'd know!

Thanks mate! This issue was confusing me a little bit... I did not know that they used a slightly shorter second gear in '95-96. So I have learned something today.

I think it's fantastic that we have people like you on this forum with such a wealth of information and general knowledge on the NSX. You are a real asset to prime and a big help to guys like me who are relatively new (but no less passionate) to the NSX experience!
