4.55 R&P and Short Gears Question

I purchased my '95 NSX with the Comptech 4.55 Ring and Pinion already installed. However the previous owner did not install the short gears. I was wondering if someone out there with a 5-speed with the short gears and 4.55 R&P installed can give me their impressions of the set-up. Is it worth it for me to install the short gears or will I not feel the difference? Will I lose a significant amount of top-end? Thanks for your advice in advance!

Short hears only affect 2nd, 3rd and 4th. 1st and 5th are the same gearing as usdm. The R&Ps are what affects the top end. Can't help with the rest, but hopefully that gets you started.

I had the short gears + 4.55 and my opinion is that it's great for the street, but too short for the track.

With this combo,
2nd gear redlines at 60
3rd at 90
4th at 120

It's also worth pointing out that the '95-96 USM NSX came with a shorter second gear than the '91-94. No, it's not as short as the JDM "short" second gear, and the third and fourth gears are the same as the '91-94, but it goes partway in closing the wide gap between first and second that creates the need for the short gears. It's about one third of the way towards the JDM short second gear.

I would leave it alone...

I used to have a 91 and I currently have a 95. In stock configuration I could tell no difference with second gear. I had the 4.55 and the short gears installed at the same time. The redline vs MPH numbers posted above are spot-on. However, I respectfully disagree that this setup is too short for the track. There is a track I go to that I do not shift out of fourth gear.....ever, even supercharged I don't need fifth gear. There is another track I go to, where my car can hit 135-140 before braking at the end of the front straight.

Thanks again for all of the replies and feedback. Simply installing the shortgears is pretty pricey so I wanted to verify if it is worth it or not. I guess the $$$ can be better spent somewhere else.

I have both on my 91. Can't tell you the difference because I bought my car with both already installed. I can tell you it's a lot quicker than expected and goes thru the gears quickly as well. If you are ever in LA, PM me and I'll let you try it out. As far as top speed, see:

Thanks again to everyone who responded and provided me with feedback. I'm trying to get my '95 on par in terms of performance with the 97+ with bolt-ons (I already have the Comptech Cold Air Intake, Lightened Flywheel, Headers, Exhaust). Maybe I should sell off my heavy 17"/18" HRE 540 wheels and get some lighter wheels. Or perhaps I should just look towards FI or Science of Speed's NA tuning. Either of those would definitely do the trick!

I would think with those mods, you should already be at a stock 97 level of performance, maybe even a little faster.

NetViper,

You think so? I haven't takent the car to the track (road course or drag strip) yet. I thought it would be much harder in a '95 - '96 to equal the performance of a 97+ due to the extra weight and the 3.0L motor. It seems like if there was any NSX to avoid in terms of performance it would be the '95-'96 (not counting the Automatic). Thanks for the encouragement!

Hey now don't dis the 95-96 cars! ;) I can keep up with any NA 3.2 l cars :) As an aside I have shorties and 4.55 rp and have described my experience on other threads about it,,so searchy.I don't use 2nd gear at any track anymore only 3-4th.5th is kinda useless too because there just is'nt enough umph (even with 290rwh) to contribute to usefull acceleration,in the space available, except maybe road america!

Thanks for the reply DocJohn! About the comment I made about avoiding the 95-96 cars, what I meant was when I was buying my NSX a lot of people told me to either get a 91-94 or 97+. Hopefully nobody took offense to the comment. I went with a '95 because the price was right and the car was very well taken care of. I love every second that I am driving it!

I don't know if anyone would notice in reality real world driving that the 95-96 was a tiny bit slower. Who knows. With I/H/E you should add roughly 25-30rhwp and you should be putting down a little more power than the 97 does stock -- that is where gearing comes into play.

Personally, I am going to hold out for a 97 or a 91 CTSC.

I know for a fact that your car hauls butt.

Also remember Docjohn happens to be one of the best DRIVER's too:):). He also failed to mention a few teaks he has under the hood, and the NSX-R suspension. Come on John, do not be bashful:):):). LOL......................

For the price of the comptech 4.55R&P, I would rather spend it on a 1.5LSD with 4.4R&P.
For the price of the comptech 4.55R&P, I would rather spend it on brake pads or track tires. :D
