A while back there was a thread concerning the best manual transmission fluid for use on the NSX. Mobile 1 "Friction Modified" got quite a few votes as I recall. Well, my new (to me) NSX started having a balky (crunchy) 2nd gear shortly after I bought it. The previous owner had used Mobile 1 "Friction Modified". It remained balky until the transmission completely warmed up. The warm up time was more than 1/2 hour. Our resident expert Larry Bastanza recommended I switch to the new "HONDA MTF-White Cap". The difference is amazing! The transmission is like new! No more double clutching (on upshifts) or crunching. If your transmission is giving you trouble I would highly recommend the fluid change. The long term prognosis will have to wait a while, but right now the shifting is as smooth as silk, even when cold.

I would also like to recommend (commend) Larry Bastanza. He did the TB/WP and 60K service on my car last week. He is very easy to work with and his work is top notch. His prices are fair and he has far more experience than most stealerships. If you go to your local Acura stealership and request a "Certified NSX Mechanic", what do you get? I believe "Certified" only means he took classes of instruction on the NSX. It does not mean he ever changed a timing belt. Larry has changed approximately 60. He's also an NSX owner and the President of NSXCA. Give him a try. You won't be sorry.

Gary, you are most fortunate to have Larry B in your neck of the woods. He is well known to many on this site and is the resident technical answer man - I have written Larry B many times and he has always been prompt to answer and very ready with advice - good advice that is. He's kind of like our resident NSX guru! There are others out there but they rarely chime in to help like Larry B does. Consider yourself lucky!

I do!

I got a chuckle out of this one Gary. I actually meant the mechanic gurus out there like Larry B - not us frequently posting member types. But we all appreciate those that write and keep our "family" talking!

Do not use the GM fluids. My cousin put GM friction and smesh in his transmission in March. The car drove fine for months until earlier this month the rear differential locked, it wouldn't free. The car would jump on turns! Once he put back honda mtf all was fine again. The transmissoin and the rear differential share the same fluids.

Thought I should share. I guess some have had good luck with GM friction modified, i'm not sure if it has to do with the colder climates in the northeast. Whatever it may be it became an issue.

I was experiencing the notchy 2nd gear. LarryB put the Honda white-cap in during a service and the transmission is like butter now. Stick to the Honda fluid.
