24 The TV show

ala Ken, I will just copy and paste from other sites. Hope this helps.....

HDTV:

* 720p - The picture is 1280x720 pixels, sent at 60 complete frames per second.
* 1080i - The picture is 1920x1080 pixels, sent at 60 interlaced frames per second (30 complete frames per second).
* 1080p - The picture is 1920x1080 pixels, sent at 60 complete frames per second.

Interlaced Scanning
In a television display, interlaced scanning refers to the process of re-assembling a picture from a series of electrical (video) signals. The "standard" NTSC system uses 525 scanning lines to create a picture (frame). The frame/picture is made up of two fields: The first field has 262.5 odd lines (1,3,5...) and the second field has 262.5 even lines (2,4,6...). The odd lines are scanned (or painted on the screen) in 1/60th of a second and the even lines follow in the next 1/60th of a second. This presents an entire frame/picture of 525 lines in 1/30th of a second.

Upconvert
The term used to describe the conversion of a lower apparent resolution to a higher number, such as "up-converting" 720p to 1080i. This is a misnomer, though, since to accomplish this, the horizontal scanning frequency is actually lowered from 45kHz to 33.75kHz. Resolution quality is not improved by this method.

one last point on HDTV =)
Channels usually choose between 720p and 1080i based on the content that they show. If their shows are very fast paced, lots of movement, 720p is the better format since you get 60 full frames a second. You lose a bit of resolution, but you see less artifacts on high motion scenes. If you used 1080i on a high motion scene you'd see some interlacing artifacts because objects on the screen would have moved slightly in the 1/60s of a second it took to show the next half of the frame. This is similar to seeing all the jagged edges in computer video files that are encoded w/ interlacing. On slower motion scenes where interlacing artifacts aren't a problem, 1080i will produce a preceived sharper image since your eye can't distinguish between all 60 frames and blends the half frames together, giving an effective 1080 lines of resolution.

This is the reason ESPN chooses 720p format (lots of fast motion in sports) and some of the movie channels choose 1080i.

I'm pretty turned off by this season, the whole techno-magic stuff they pull off it getting absolutely ridiculous. It was bad in the first two seasons, but now they practically have 24 hour satellite surveillance everywhere in the US at once and can pinpoint people via infrared down to exact locations and floors within a building?

They have magical methods to decrypt data, factory hardware key-combo sequences to bypass software based security. The anonymous email they found regarding nukes was instantly traced back to a specific chinese national?!? Hello, it's ANONYMOUS!!! The headers are spoofed like spammers do. We need CTU to hunt down spammers if they have that sort of ability!!! Even if they could do that, they could trace it back to a mail server, then they'd need access to the server logs to obtain an IP address, would need to contact the ISP to figure out what login was assigned that IP address, then they'd need to try to associate the login with an account or person (which I'm sure would be faked anyway). ARGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, this magic computer crap really is killing it for me. FOX really needs to hire some technology consultants and try to keep this realistic (much like Babylon 5 hired physicists and a whole bevy of scientists and medical personnel to try to avoid the Treklike technology magic that too many shows employ to get their characters out of tough situations).

im psyched for tonight!
