2007 Mustang GT Vs. 1991 NSX

A live axle mustang finished 2nd and 3rd in the last Grand Am Cup/Koni Challenge race behind an M3 at Trois-Rivieres, a street course with demanding braking zones, also a Mustang won a race prior at Barber Motorsports Park, a curvy sweeping track known to be an advantage for M3s and Porsches.

It dosnt take changing to independant suspension for them to go fast on track, and I would personally take a GT500KR over most NSXs out there in terms of laptime.

ok here is a question, If the GT owner is part of the Mustang GT forum...I wonder what they would be saying about racing the NSX...oh don't worry they have no power? What do you guys think?

well they are about to get educated on the power of the nsx. the beauty about the nsx is that it can do more with less, alot less.

Get him Paul!!!!! Good luck today, I don't think you'll need it though.

Thanks. I'm getting anxious.. I didn't really get much psi advice, so I'm going to keep it at 33F/40R. If I have problems hooking up(which I shouldn't with stock wheels/tires), then I'll go down in the rear in 5 psi increments.

I have been in my friends 2007 Mustang GT and those things are torque monsters. If both of you guys are stock, I'm not so sure about this one.

I had a SC'ed 2004 S2000 with an estimated 350 hp and I barely could break away from him. And above 120 MPH he would start to gain on me. My S2000 only weighed ~2900 lbs.

You also have to remember that the NSX back in 1991 was rated on the old hp model. It may be closer to 255 hp - 260 hp at the crank in today's standard.

I believe that if both of you guys both race your cars correctly then he will win, however, I believe that the NSX is an easier car to shift and drive, which will give you an advantage there.

I just hope that he mis-shifts or doesn't hit the clutch just right.

I really want to hear about the results of this one.

A bone-stock 1991 will put down 235 rwhp or better. Regardless of the change in SAE standards, the drivetrain is more efficient than the Mustang.

The power does not have to go very far. Drivetrain loss is 12-13% for the NSX versus at least 15% for the Mustang.

Paul's car should be making at least 250 rwhp, if not closer to 260 rwhp. My old 1993 put down 261 rwhp with an exhaust and AIC, stock airbox, stock headers.

The results are in...drumroll....... NSX-5 Mustang-0.

Before you all get your panties in a bunch, the video and time slips will be posted asap. The guy who filmed it all is getting it on his site as we speak. He’s sponsoring people’s track fees to start his auto site. This is his first covered ‘competition’ and he’s just getting things together now.

The NSX killed the Mustang every time down the strip. Even with 3 out 5 of my launches not being good, I was able to blow him away in 2nd gear. As soon as he needed to shift into 3rd, I gained 2+ car lengths on him and never looked back. 3rd gear just put even more distance between us. The power band on this car is truly amazing, even stock with just exhaust.

I’m at work and don’t have the slips with me now. We were out late and I got up for work and was in a hurry. From what I can remember.

1st run 13.9 with a 2.3 reaction time.
2nd: 14.0 with a 2.2 reaction
3rd: 13.9 with a 2.3 reaction
4th 13.66 with a 2.0 reaction…unfortunately this didn’t get filmed, but I have the slip to prove it.
5th 13.7 with a 2.0 reaction

I think my highest trap speeds were 105, maybe 104.

He never broke 14.6 in his Mustang GT.’

I also took down a C5 vette on one pass. He ran 14.0. It may have been an automatic.
I squeaked out a win against a Jeep SRT8. I hit 13.66 again and he did a 13.7, I believe. Those things are fast.

I made 7 passes total.

I’m really happy with the 13.6. The car has 127k on her and is a 91’. I’m proud of her…

All in all it was a good day. Everyone there was nice and showed a lot of interest in the car. The Mustang guys were very cool. The vette guys not so much. All in all it was a very good crowd.

Thanks for all the weight reduction tips and info on the mustang. My car is a lot faster than I thought. It's amazing what it can do on a smooth road. What an engine.. I didn't think it was possible, but after 2 years of ownership I have even more respect for this car.

Congratulations.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......sweet release!!!

I tried to tell myself the result wouldn't matter to me.

But it does!!!

Way to go!!!

PS. I'm glad you did this at the track. Well done.

Much respect. You da man!

Now we can continue to officially call them "Rustangs". Maybe they will catch up when the next model is due out in 2011 lol.

wow i had no idea the nsx is so fast. i just got mine 6 months ago and still dont know the basic numbers, but ...

so let me get this straight, paul's car is stock except for exhaust, and this bumps his power from 235rwhp to atleast 250rwhp? thats a big jump from JUST exhaust. damn did they really put that limiting of an exhaust on this car from the factory or what?

i have a 92 with aftermarket intake, headers, and exhaust (still has cats). does this mean i am probably in the area of 260 rwhp?

sorry for hijacking this thread, GO NSX!!! YEAAA!!!

It is difficult to compare dyno results from different dynos, testing conditions, atmospheric levels, etc. The best you can do is to use the same dyno to compare a baseline versus subsequent modifications on the same car, and even that is far from perfect.

The numbers I gave were estimates based on a variety of dyno results, many of which have been posted on this site.

I have seen dynos of 250 rwhp or better from cars with aftermarket exhaust only. Whether those cars would have put down 235 rwhp or better (or worse) on the same dyno in stock condition is unknown. I do believe that aftermarket headers and exhaust together can result in a 20+ rwhp increase, as has been shown by a variety of dynos and vendors over the years.

For example, my current 1991 put down 267 rwhp with I/H/E but no cats. The cats are not particularly restrictive and don't rob that much hp. I have seen other dynos from cars with I/H/E and cats make 260+ rwhp. I would say 260 rwhp is a reasonable number for a car with I/H/E and cats. YDMV.

This is a big thread. I wonder why other's aren't putting in their two cents. I expected more for a win in the community. And why do all of a sudden I want an Integra Type R?

It's 2:25 CST. People besides you and I are working:wink:

The video link is coming momentarily...

Glad to hear that you put the beatdown on the Mustang! LOL! Do you remember what the trap speed was for the Mustang? With an even better launch (1.8) you should be hitting 13.4. I went to the track with "RedlineRex" last year and he was running 12.9-13.0 with his '91 or '92 NSX with I/H/E.

..... NSX-5 Mustang-0. .......

Very very cool, congrats, as i said, that mustang should be running an S2k not an NSX, good you put him on his place with your 17 y.o. "underpowered" car ... very cool .. now, Lovefab yourself!

Oscar

Yes! I'm so happy I could piddle.

So ... anybody here have any idea how an NSX with CTSC would fare against a GT500?

I'm going to get the slips on here tomorrow morning. I know he was under 100mph on most, if not all of his passes.
