Hello,
I'm updating my rear valence to 2002+ and thinking of doing it myself since my paint shop could not do it. Do I have to drop my exhaust to get to the screws or remove my rear bumper cover etc? Any feedback is much appreciated.

If it's too much work, maybe I'll have someone else retrofit it for me. Any shop in the Bay Area that you have had yours done that you would recommend? Also, can the pre-2002 valence V-support bracket fit the new valence? Cause my paint shop lost mine  .

Thanks,
Phong

Hmmm, Im surprised your local body shop couldnt do it  .

I would definitely have a body shop do it, they would need to paint it anyways (no?).

You would need the new 02+ "V' bracket

Its an awesome conversion, post pictures when your done.

I've taken my rear bumper off close to 5 times now, tinkering around with different diffusers. It's not as complicated as it may seem. There are 10 bolts holding the bumper on to the chassis. 2 in the trunk 4 (2 on each side) in the wheelwells, and 4 under the car right above the exhaust. And also you have a plastic plate that connects the rear spats with the chassis. Each one has 4 bolts. It takes me about 30-45 minutes now and i'm more familiar with the process than i'd like to be...... Just so you know, there is absolutely no way to take the diffuser off without having the entire bumper/diffuser assembly off. Once you have the whole assembly off putting the diffuser on is a snap. It's just a whole bunch of screws, very straightforward........

It's not very difficult to remove the rear bumper. I am not a handy person, but I managed to take the rear bumper off all by myself. I did need my friend to assist me when putting the 02+ rear valence on the car though. Be careful when removing the bumper from the car so you dont' get any scratches on the bumper.

The pre-2002 V-support bracket is different size. You will need to get a new one.

Good luck.

If you choose to take it to a body shop that can take careof the whole job and do it right, try Brooks Motor Cars, 9829 Bigge Street, Oakland, CA 94603; 510.632.8901. They are the best andhave been working on my cars for close to 20 years now. They did the rearvalance upgrade to my 2001 NSX- painted it and installed it. Daniel Kim is the owner and a great guy. Good luck. Oh, I can't believe a body shop said they could not do it. What a way to throw away a customer.

Thank you all for your prompt replies. I've been out of town for the last couple of days, and have thought about having someone to do the retrofit for me instead. I will call the shop in Oakland as recommended by Michael. The paint shop that I had the rear valence painted has never done any NSX retrofit (mostly american classics) so they were a little reluctant, and that made me feel uncomfortable too, which was also why I didn't want to try it myself from the beginning cause (what if ???). I will post the picture once it is done. Thanks again.

Re: 2002+ rear valence mounting (before & after)

Alright, after reading Diablo360 detailed descriptions I decided to install it myself and it took me 3+ hours. I guess I'm more hands-on than I thought I was. Thank you all again for your input.

Phong, that diffuser looks great. Good job on the install. I bet you saved a lot of $$ by doing it yourself. Hopefully you didn't scratch anything  The first time I took the rear bumper off it took me about 2 hours only because I was trying to figure out where everything was, what bolted to what, etc...... The great thing about these cars is that they are so simple to work on once you know where the nuts and bolts are.

Now you need that carbon fiber rear diffuser that Erick (evo575gtc) is selling...... I saw it in person and it looks great. I'll probably pick one up when I do my rear diffuser in the near future.....

Looks good. How much does the conversion cost and what exactly do you have to buy?

Whatwasthat,
I bought the 2002 rear valence for $780 and $300 for painting, so total without installation is about $1100, just add 3-4 hours labor cost for installation if you don't want to do it yourself. The kit came with valence, V bracket, and couple screws and spacers, and these are all you need. If you plan to install it yourself, read Proffesor Diablo360 instructions, it's very helpful.

Diablo360,
I'll search for that carbon fiber rear diffuser to see how it looks, but my next tentative project will probably be either bigger rims or bilstein lower perch shocks. It was a bit challenge to install everything by myself, but I managed to have only couple hair lines. Thanks again for the instruction.

i just got finished installing my DF rear valence, it was more work then i anticapated. took about 2-3 hrs. oh yeah, when the bumper comes off be ready to lift it up, it's fairly heavy...i wasn't aware that the bumper reinforcement was directly attached :)

updated: with pics... sorry for the bad lighting...i'll take pics during the day when the rain stops. oh yeah, i also did the blank center taillight install the night before.

Jimmy,
Post some pictures would you. I just wanna see the DF valence compare to the honda valence, seems like you have saved at least 250 bucks.

The only difference I knew of was the material used ones fiberglass while the other is the oem plastic. But I figured if I was going to reverse in to something or get rear ended the bumper would probably be replaced anyways, this way I save some $$$

I'll post pics later after work.

Phong,

Great job, the car looks awsome with the new valence. I haven't seen the old stye valence very much (mainly in photos) but your before and after, WOW what a difference. That should be on everyones wish list.

Doing your own mod is always more gratifying  .

Mike, I agree. I seem to enjoy and value them more. I only wish I could do everything and have all the time in the world  .

Jimmy,
Can't wait to see your car in person. The pictures are a little bit dark.

Hi guys,

i'm also updating to 02 rear valence. i read that the V supports are not the same so i have to replace. i have also done some research looking at the parts diagram found in acuraoemparts.com. Valence is part# 71511-SL0-000ZZ (SKIRT, RR. BUMPER) but no parts description says "V support".

the only part that looks like a V-support is part# 71555-SL0-010 STAY, RR. BUMPER CENTER (LOWER) or could anyone give me actual part number ??

thanks in advance,

Antonio

Call Tim Polinak at Ray Laks Acura/Honda it's only 630 shipped to your front door. and you will need the lower center stay on a 2002+.

Hi guys,
Sorry to take the topic ot but I have a question, if you don't mind. The right hand side of my rear valence looks like it is starting to come off. I see a slight gap in the black valence, at the point where the black diffuser meets the rear bumper. Any idea if this is an easy fix? Could there be a loose bolt somewhere? Here is a pic:

Do you think it could be covered under warranty? My factory warranty doesnt expire until 8/2007.
