20 October ALMS - Laguna Seca Update

Sorry for the late update on my hotel search. I've been away from my computer for a while.

Some good news and some bad news.

First, the good news.
I found a nice Hilton Property called the Hilton Garden Inn. It's in Monterey halfway between the beaches and halfway to the track (less than 10 minutes to the track). Great location. Most recently renovated hotel on the Peninsula. Lots of included amenities. Good parking.

Rates so far:
If you check in on Thursday and check out Sunday, it's $170/night prepaid or $189/night not prepaid. I'm checking in on Thursday.

If you check in Friday and check out Sunday, it's $206/night prepaid or $229/night not prepaid.

The bad news:
I've been talking w/ Hilton and it seems that hotels in the area are not discounting rates for that weekend due to the race weekend. Given that, these rates are still very good for a Hilton property w/ the great location and amenities.

I'm still talking w/ the Hilton Garden Inn GM to see if we can have a welcome reception for either Thursday or Friday night. That might be a nice way for many of us to meet each other and kick off the fun weekend together.

Finally, I'm working on setting up a personalized website through Hilton to allow us to register. This should ease the registration process and help gaurantee that we get the lowest available rate.

Just a quick update on where we are with ticket sales. As of the time of this posting, we have sold 94 of the 100 corral spots. If you are sitting on the fence trying to decide if you want to go or not, now is the time to make a decision or it will be made for you.

As we go past 100 we will keep a waiting list. There are invariably some people that sign up, then for various reasons find they can not make the event. We want to make sure all of the tickets are used.

If you are not an NSXCA member, PM or email me about how you can get tickets to attend this event if you are interested. The cost will be NSXCA membership ($40/per year, which can pay for itself in discounts for service etc. plus $80 per ticket. This is going to be the biggest NSX party in the west this year, you don't want to miss it.

I've been working with the Hilton Sales Director on getting a group rate for the weekend at the Hilton Garden Inn, but I've found that it's better (less expensive) for each of us to book our rooms individually instead of going in on a group rate. I know, it sounds strange, but the group rates are higher and one of us would have to sign a contract to gaurantee at least 10 rooms. So, instead of a group booking, go ahead and reserve your own room if you want to stay at this hotel.

Here is what you should do if you want to get a room at the Hilton Garden Inn Monterey:
1. Go directly to the reservation website for the hotel: http://hiltongardeninn.hilton.com/en/gi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=MRYMHGI&WT.srch=1

2. Select your dates for check in and check out. NOTE: If you check in on Thursday night vs. Friday night, your per night rate is significantly lower (by that, I mean $70/night lower; so it might make sense to come in on Thursday and take advantage of the extra day - it's like getting the Thursday for almost free vs coming on Friday).

Current rates as of this morning (they seem to change often and as the date gets closer, they go up):

Prepay check in Thursday/ Check out Sunday: $152/night
Not prepaid check in Thursday /Check out Sunday: $169/night

Prepay check in Friday / Check out Sunday: $215/night
Not prepaid check in Friday / Check out Sunday: $239/night.

I've reserved a room w/ check in on Thursday and I've talked w/ a handful of others who have as well.

They do offer rooms w/ two beds, so if some of you want to share a room, that's also an option.

These rates are pretty good for a Hilton property in Monterey. In fact, I hear that Hilton employees can't even get discounted rates for that weekend due to the race.

Again - if you want a room at this hotel, go to the website and reserve a room.
http://hiltongardeninn.hilton.com/en/gi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=MRYMHGI&WT.srch=1

This way you have a good chance to gaurantee a room. Should you find a better deal later, just cancel this reservation before 72 hours of arrival.

These rates are pretty good and if several of us stay at this same hotel, I think we will have a lot of fun (plus we can help each other w/ quick clean up/detail of our cars).

For anyone still comptemplating going to the Monterey Sports Car Championships and attending the Acura Hospitality tent and parking in the corral, we have ONE ticket left. After that one is sold, names will be placed on the wait list. Order now or miss the biggest NSX party on the west coast this year!

My car might be going for sale soon. If the sale price is right, I'll toss my two tickets in with it for the new owner. If not, they'll be put up for sale here for those who didn't make the buy initially. Whether or not you will still need to be a NSXCA member still I don't know. You'll need to find that out. Will keep posted with my 2 tickets.

Please note that the $152 is a Net Direct promotion and is a non-refundable rate. They have a $159 rate with Thursday-Sunday which is refundable with 72 hours notice.

The 10 rooms are not reserved under any particular name - at least the front desk didn't find it, so make sure you ask. The Hilton Garden Inn is about 8 miles from the track.

Just so everyone knows, The tickets come with an ID package for the person that purchased the tickets. If you sell them or give them to someone else, we will not have that person in the database as the owner of the tickets. The credentials package that get mailed next month to the purchaser will not match the name of the person.

We have a wait list of people that want the tickets for this event. If you do not need your tickets, the club will refund your purchase price and sell them to the next person on the wait list.

The Hilton Garden Inn, is all booked up :frown: ....................bill

Bill,
Check for rooms on expedia.com. I know that the Hilton Garden Inn holds rooms for Expedia. These rooms are considered "reserved" by Expedia until someone books them.

Hrant,
Good clarification. The lowest rate is a non-refundable prepaid rate.

------------------------------------------------------
In addition, we don't have a block a rooms reserved since we didn't set up the group contract. The rooms are first come, first served and there is no name associated w/ it.

Some good news. Because of the high demand for tickets to the Monterey Sports Car Championships Acura NSX Corral IMSA has agreed to up the number of participants that we can have. They have raised the number of cars from 100 to 150 and the number of participants from 200 to 300.

If we can get all 150 spaces filled, this will be the biggest gathering of NSX's since NSXPO 2003, possibly since NSXPO '99. Something you do not want to miss!

If you have not signed up yet, do so soon as I will be closing registration on September 10th so that there is sufficient time to make all of the final arrangements.

Clear your calendars and come to the party.

If you are not an NSXCA member PM me and I will give you the information on how to join the club and purchase tickets.

This week’s update

With the expanded limit on the number of tickets, we are at 104 NSX drivers that have put their orders in with 2 more in the works. Only 4 weeks left to get your order in.

The other bit of news was that IMSA, given our increased participation, was going to see if Laguna Seca would up the parade lap participation from 50 cars to 100. Once I know that final number, I will be working on the parade lap sign ups.

I will be contacting those that have signed up soon to verify addresses for mailing tickets and credentials. I will also be asking for the names of all of guests that will be accompanying you so I can get their credentials done as well.

If you have not signed up yet, time to move. Just tell your kid the wedding will have to wait, tell the wife that there will be another anniversary next year, and come to Monterey.

I was under the impression that all cars were doing the parade lap - not just a limited number. Please advise.

I found out well into this process that we were targeted to have only 50 NSX's in the parade lap. IMSA is in the process right now to negotiate up that number based on the number of poeple that have signed up for the corral. Once I know what the final number is I will start to work through the list of people that have signed up to see who wants to be in the parade lap.

I am toying with two options for priority, seniority in the club or sequence of sign up. I will have to look at the list, it may not make much difference.

You are probably right; it may not make much of a difference once you line the lists up.

In any case, hopefully the priority is done by sequence of sign up, because those w/ the most enthusiasm for this event should get to go on the parade lap. Doing it by senority of membership would be unfortunate and would discourage newer members from participating and showing enthusiasm for future events.

I'm sure you'll come up w/ a workable method.

I have a suggestion on the order of the cars on the parade lap.

1. Model Year - 91 First then by
2 Production Number

Just in case your wondering, I have a 95 LOL.

Yes, it looks like this turn of events (the parade lap criteria) could make things a little "sticky". I'm sure it's safe to say that prabably all NSX attendees would like to participate in that event. I'm not sure where I was in the sign-up, but I know that my NSXCA membership lapsed since 1999 (or so) when I first joined and that I only recently re-joined to participate in this great event.

Where does that leave me? Let's hope all 100 or so cars can get some track time.

A public discussion of sharing ideas and opinions is nice but I believe it is best to let Tom decide however he thinks it is appropriate to make the list for the parade lap without disclosing the details. Whichever criteria he chooses, it is going to make some happier than others and open the door for potential criticism by those less happy.

Tom has been an NSXCA officer and active member since 1999 if not earlier. He deserves the discretion. Just my $0.02.

I hope you don't think I was trying to advocate for any criteria for choosing who participates. I was simply pointing out the difficulty in making any choices at all. As I said, I hope all 100+ cars can participate.

In fact, in my last post I was going to mention that I have enough actual Laguna Seca track time to pass on the parade lap if it came down to me or a newer member.

Hi guys, I'm hoping someone local can give me helpful info, I'm down to the following 4 hotel choices, but need a little more input other than what I read on Expedia and Priceline. Want to know more regarding parking (fee and spaces) and so on. Info that does not show up on the interenet.

Hotel Pacific
Spindrift Inn
Best Western Beach Resort
Hilton Garden Inn

Thanks in advance

In my case, which may not be the issues here, when I saw that the method to choose who participates in the parade lap (should the available spots be less than the number of NSX’s that show up) was going to be a difficult and sensitive matter, I though I would offer a suggestion on the next order of business - how does one determine the order of the parade lap participants. Although there are always a number of ways to skin a cat, I thought it would be fair, and hopefully defuse future conflicts on ones order on the grid, if preference is given to the first model year and then on up to 2005. Since there would likely be multiple cars in a given year, the next fairest way to select the order of the participants with the same model year is by production number. I certainly would not be offended if another method was used. And, I hope I did not put pressure on the organizers, its their call.

However, no matter how all of this goes down, I'm tremendously excited about this event, and I’m looking forward to the caravan that some of us in SoCal are putting together, the races themselves and the chance to meet a whole lot of NSX owners that share the same passion - the NSX.

See you there!

Mario

Mario,

I think that it's going to be a major undertaking to try to organize the order of participants. Once we're there, I don't think that the event organizers will be interested in waiting for us to get ourselves in order. It'll pretty much be where they'll call us and we get to the designated spot as quickly as we can.

I'm guessing that the best we can do is to separate the parking for the participants and non-participants so that no one is blocked in when the parade lap is called.

The only way that I can think of to have the partipating cars sorted for the parade lap is to have them sorted for parking (by year, etc..). This way, when the cars start pulling out in order, everyone will be in correct order for the parade lap. Problem is that it will take way too much work on the part of our NSXCA reps to determine how many of each model year NSX will be showing up and basically reserve spots so that everyone is in the right spot when they arrive.

I think that it will be a big enough accomplishment to even sort by pre-'02 and '02+. Realistically though, I doubt that any kind of sorting would be practical.
