Bad Karma: Our Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid breaks down

Our Fisker Karma cost us $107,850. It is super sleek, high-tech—and now it’s broken.

We have owned our car for just a few days; it has less than 200 miles on its odometer. While doing speedometer calibration runs on our test track (a procedure we do for every test car before putting it in service by driving the car at a constant 65 mph between two measured points), the dashboard flashed a message and sounded a “bing“ showing a major fault. Our technician got the car off the track and put it into Park to go through the owner’s manual to interpret the warning. At that point, the transmission went into Neutral and wouldn’t engage any gear through its electronic shifter except Park and Neutral.

We let the car sit for about an hour and restarted it. We could now engage Drive and the same error message disappeared. After moving it only a few feet the error message reappeared and when we tried to engage Reverse the transmission went straight to Park and again no motion gear could be engaged. After calling the dealer, which is about 100 miles away, they promptly sent a flatbed tow truck to haul away the disabled Fisker.

We buy about 80 cars a year and this is the first time in memory that we have had a car that is undriveable before it has finished our check-in process.

Building an all-new car company from the ground up is a monumental challenge, especially for a car with innovative drivetrain technology like the Karma. Designing, engineering, certification, manufacturing, and distributing an all-new car pose giant hurtles for a start-up company.

We encountered other problems with a Karma press car that visited the track for a few hours, and we have heard of problems at press events. In addition, we see that some owners are experiencing a variety of issues, as evidenced by forums such as FiskerBuzz.com.

When we get the car back, we’ll film a First Drive video with our more traditional initial impressions. But so far, Fisker ownership is proving to be a bumpy ride.

yeah funding a car company that will produce a car none of the 99% will ever afford.

its not good and Unemployment is at 8.5% LOL
people have just given up looking for jobs.

its probably at 15.7% but they want ytou to think things are getting better.

election anyone?

Overall Fisker is doing fine, saw one last saturday in Dallas, actually it was two. They opened a new dealership here. The owner loves his car, and said he was selling his favorite car, his Maserati quotrport, because all he ever drives is this car. He also said that Fisker was repaying the government loan this month. and that there will be a smaller model for half the money and the interior is actually bigger, as is the trunk.

well dont throw all your lego's in the same bucket

only time will tell.

cool car none the less

but man what a bad thing to have when day 1 of testing it has failure like that

yup, that does suck........I was sittting in one saturday, beautiful car and finish, dont know how long it will last but was very nice. Stereo was great too.

They probably need to take the ECU out and blow really hard on the contactor pins and put it back in. If that doesn't work, they should probably roll the batteries around and press the start button even harder. Works on my remote.

Personally, I don't think that even if it was a car that 99% can afford that the government should be financing it.

There are banks, private investors, etc, etc that all exist to fund great commercial ideas. They do so at risk and generate good returns if their risk works out.

Governments should be governing and not investing in start up technologies.

We are living in upside down times when our government is doing the work of banks and our banks are doing the work of the government.

You have to understand that the technology being developed and created by Fisker and other companies will eventually work their way down to lower priced models. Eventually we will be driving $20,000 <insert future renewable source of propulsion here> cars.

Remember that ABS, air-bags, etc... only came on very expensive car models. Now they are standard equipment in even the most inexpensive car on the market.

Or this. I guess none of these car guys ever played nintendo.

I'm wondering if you were referring to the original nintendo cartridges.

YES, EXCEPT NONE OF THOSE TECHNOLOGY YOU REFEREED TO WAS FINANCED BY THE US GOVERNMENT, AND THEY WORKED WHEN WAS INTRODUCED!!!

This green energy scam is bad and there are so much dirt under the carpet and it's coming out like a tsunami!

If Tesla, Prius, Insight all works without the government investment, what makes you think it is a good policy for the taxpayers' dollars to fund anything thing with these second rate companies?

HOW ABOUT OFFER TAX BREAK INCENTIVES TO BIG COMPANIES SUCH AS HONDA AND TOYOTA SO THEY CAN BUILT MORE OF THESE TYPE OF CARS WITHOUT INSERTING SO MUCH FINANCIAL BURDENS ON US THE CITIZENS? SO OUR POLITICIANS CAN STOP USING OUR MONEY TO BUILT THEIR MODERN DAY TOY TRAIN?

Absolutely absurd!!

On a different note.. I think whomever is running Consumer Reports these days escaped from the looney bin or was a Hollywood reality tv show reject. They have become so much like a tabloid and totally playing the headlines that I feel they'll find almost any reason to sensationalize a story. Look what they did to the 2012 Civic and now the Karma. I mean, yes, they were bad cars but I don't agree with their supposedly "unbiased" reporting methodologies. Hell... They ranked the Chevy Avalanche as truck of the year? Are you serious? I've lost all respect for them.

I was behind this one 2 weeks ago in austin. Very nice looking car

Behind one as driving behind one, or behind the steering whee of one...lol

NSXSUPRA's ex go's boss just bought one in Irvine California. Those cars are popping up everywhere here.

Let's see how long Fisker as a company going to last.

I have a feeling that they're just going to try to sell bunch of them and pull out of the country and ignore the warrantee.

When blowing failed, I used to put NES games in the freezer for 10-15 min. Not sure why, but it worked like a champ.

Well to be honest I'm not entirely sure about all the politics regarding the fisker, or honda, or toyota. I don't know how much money the government gives them or doesn't give them. So I have no comment on that.

I was referring to the fact that the technology does need to be explored and put into practice. So we can get away from a depleting natural resource!
