Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax? JH4NA1285TT000234

Need advice from the experienced NSX owners, please.

Just test drove a '96 with 67k (VIN JH4NA1285TT000234, if anyone can Carfax it for me). Owner has had it for 8 months, bought it from a guy who bought it from an insurance company (all of this according to the owner). No records on maintenance. He said it had had damage to the right rear panel and it had been replaced. Owner said he had the alignment tested and it was clean (says he's got the paperwork, but didn't have it with him).

Drove fine, as far as this unsophisticated consumer could tell. Looks pretty good (fair-to-good, with same disclaimer that I'm not very experienced).

He's asking $29,500 but willing to take $28,000. He's fine with me taking it to the dealership and having them look it over (they say they'll charge me $180). Does this sound promising (given the low price) or scary (given no maintenance records, insurance company owner, accident, etc.)?

Should I go for it, or pass? Thanks for any help.

Re: Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax?

Was it just in an accident and repaired, or is it a salvage title. Big difference. To find history on maint. look at the city that the car was titled in according to CARFAX. Call the local Acura dealers in the area with the VIN and see if they worked on it. You would be surprised how much info you can find out.

Re: Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax?

I'm not personally all that afraid of a wrecked car that's been fixed correctly. It will never be worth as much as a virgin one, but the asking price reflects that.

Ask yourself if you'd rather have a '96 with a history or a mint low mileage well maintained '91 for the same price. Personally I'd go with the older one, but that's just a personal decision.

Re: Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax?

Doug, thanks for writing. I don't know ... I just assumed that if the insurance company held title that they must have declared it "totalled" at some point. Can you explain the difference between salvage title and the alternative? And, if the damage wasn't very big, why would an insurance company have title? Sorry, but your dealing with a car neophyte  here.

PS: Can someone run a CARFAX? Appreciated.

Re: Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax?

Dave, thanks. Do you think taking it to the dealer and having them give it the once-over will tell me what I need to know about a repaired car?

Re: Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax?

My NSX2avoid database says this about this NSX :

1996 Red/Black NSX-T. Spun into a wall at the track October 2003. Primary impact front, secondary impact rear.

the information is shown to have been collected from this forum

Hope this helps, although news are not too good...
Alex

Re: Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax?

Is this the first NSX you ever test drove? If so, how can you be sure if that car runs fine, since you have no prior experience for comparison.

the price for PPI sounds about right, although I remember my cost was around $140. PPI can only tell you the current status of the car, they won't be able to give you enough information such as if the require maintenance has been performed or not.

Nothing against car with past accident, but you have to understand NSX is not that cheap to fix.

***need to get all records from previous owner***

Good luck

Re: Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax?

Wow, Alex, thanks. I think I'll pass, but I have loved looking at this car (from afar) ever since they first came out. The one I drove today was my first. Maybe someday. :)

then run away from this car. For the same $$$ make yourself a favor and buy an earlier model with maintenance papers and a clear title. NSX are not like your usual car and if the insurance totalled it, it was because it cost more to fix it than have it written-off. If someone still "fixed it" and made it worth his time and money, he must have had to cut corners somewhere, no ? (since the insurance estimated that it'd be too costly to fix). my advice is to run, run away !

Re: Wrecked '96 - Should I buy? Carfax?

NSXWIND, thanks. You're right ... I have no basis for comparison other than what any car should feel like. What I meant is that there were no obvious driving flaws ...

Since you're in CA, why don't you hook up with someone there to have a test drive and learn the ropes from someone who already went through this. It'll save you time and $$$ and will make it a much more enjoyable experience in the long run. Good luck to ya ! ;)

Phoen$x, thanks. Nice to know what a liar the seller of this car is. I wish I could warn the next potential victim about this car and how helpful this site is.

Thanks to all of you for saving me from a mistake.

I have compiled a database from different sources of information. When people ask for Carfax and the car turns with a bad title, or send me a pm with a car they know was totalled, or appears on Ebay, etc... The above link has lots of the info I have, but I'm afraid is not complete anymore. I have more entries than one can find following this link.

Those pictures make me want to cry! :(

But apparently she lives, has a good plastic surgeon, and is waiting for an unsuspecting victim...hmmm...reminds me of many of the women I meet at the bars in La Jolla and Del Mar. Ha ha.

you should be able to buff that out :D

Like somebody already said, you could find a clean 92-93 with 1-2 owners instead of 7  owners for that price range. The mileage might be a bit high, but then again you are shopping for a Honda ;)
