During a sprint car even ( dirt track) he put some 20 year old kid (Kevin Ward) into the wall and the kid jumps out of his car and starts running back toward the track acting like a mad man and pointing at tony as he is coming back around..Tony sideswipes him and drags him 20 feet before he is then thrown another 50 feet where he lays dying....it's unbelievable !!!! Tony Stewarts life and career may be over as he knows it, but the kid is ultimately to blame on this one....there is video on you tube showing it if you want to see it for yourself.

Wow!!!

Why on earth would you walk into the middle of a race track. I don't care how mad you are.

Kid was an idiot. Picked a fight with a racecar, and lost.

The initial contact didn't even look like Stewart was to blame. Or maybe I don't understand that racing types' etiquette/rules. Both were in concentric drifts, and they made contact towards the apex of the drift.

Don't understand why the kid would get out, run into oncoming traffic like an idiot, and try to pick a fight with a car. Look at the way he moves. He has to jump out of the way several times to prevent getting hit by other drivers.

It was complete negligence on his part.

There is no way Stewart is going down criminally for this. But his reputation is another story, simply because people are just reporting this the wrong way. "Stewart hits and kills kid." How about: "Kid idiotically runs into racecar traffic and is hit. Dies later from injuries."

To me, it sounds like Stewart gunned it as he approached the incredibly foolish kid. From what I've read, the witnesses are saying the same thing. Either way, how tragic.

Good reminder: don't make decisions while angry.

Why he acted like a Winston Cup driver? Because that is what he has seen on TV for the last 15 years. It's surprising people haven't been killed sooner during some of the escapades of cup.

Doesn't sound like he "gunned it", especially under a yellow, but possibly if not probably saw the Darwin award winner at the last moment on the dark track and hit the gas to try to maneuver his car out of the way. It is a dirt track and there is a lot of throttle steering/drifting so it's not so simple as simply steering out of the way of an idiot walking into traffic.

After re-watching it a few times, Stewart definitely hit the gas just prior to the accident (either that, or another car revved up at the same time). Two possibilities:

1. Stewart was trying to scare the kid/get back at him for calling him out. Car ended up losing control, and Stewart unintentionally hit the kid.

2. Stewart was trying to steer out of the way. I don't know the dynamics of racing on a track like that in those cars, so someone please fill me in if you need a lot of gas to steer out of the way like that.

3. Complete accident. Stewart was distracted by the kid, and just made a mistake.

4. He actually tried to run him over.

I am ruling out 4, and most likely going with #1 . Stewart saw the kid calling him out, maybe they had a history during this race, and he wanted to retaliate by blowing right past the kid (maybe kicking up some dirt in his face). Car slid by accident, and ended up throwing the kid like a rag doll.

Either way, Stewart will have a pretty damn good defense. At best they can get him for manslaughter, but even then, given the circumstances, I think he will have a good defense.

Again, his reputation on the other hand, is another story.

What the media is doing with this is a rotten shame.

If he was trying to make a name for himself he succeeded. The moment he stepped out of the car he was responsible for anything that occurred beyond that. Foolish. In his defense Stewart was most likely trying to roost him with dirt and misjudged the distance and or the kid stepped closer to the Stewarts car.

At around the :36 mark in the vid below, somebody gunned their gas pedal.

http://youtu.be/Ja7TlxpPb_8

No one can tell definitely from the vid if the sound either way but it sounds like it came from Stewarts car b/c Stewart seemed to be going a bit faster than the cars preceding him. Or it may be an illusion b/c of the obvious swerve.

From what I've read, the local sheriff and DA don't have any criminal charges planned as the evidence doesn't support what I just stated above. I'm sure there's data acquisition information and other video that will prove more conclusive. It'd behoove TS to get that info out there in the forum of public opinion as soon as possible if there really wasn't an malicious intent.

I believe Steveny hit the nail on the head with his comment.

" Foolish. In his defense Stewart was most likely trying to roost him with dirt and misjudged the distance and or the kid stepped closer to the Stewarts car. "

Everyone please realize that the camera was hundreds of feet away from the impact site. Whatever SOUND recorded was close to the camera and not where the kid was. There is no way to draw any conclusion if Stewart "gunned" his car just from this particular video.

smh.

Man, the more I watch the video it almost looks like TS does anything but try to avoid the idiot on the track....

It actually looks like he turns toward him rather then away...also, there had to have
Been communication with the drivers that said idiot was on the track by the time TS comes back around....

Like some have said on here,I think TS wanted to spook the kid, but didn't realize his back tires stick out( unlike his nascar) and got a little too close and it sucked the kid right in and spit him out.. You don't even see TS slow down ....

I blame the hot head kid for everything that happened to him and he is defiantly a Darwin Award winner, but this doesn't look good for TS....

In TS's defense, it looks like Ward moves back and forth, so maybe TS did try to avoid him by going back and forth. Just no way to tell without more data.

Very insightful.

exactly perhaps rme too?

Your post would have been removed if it was on AtlasF1.

Tradgic none the less. I cannot imagine the guilt I would feeling knowing that I hit and killed a human being. RIP to teh kid and thoughts go to TS. I hope he can get over this tragity.

Wow, I've been reading a lot of stupid comments on youtube, as far as saying it was murder. Some people don't know the definition of murder. SMFH. Just from the one video alone, we can't deduce that Tony hit the kid intentionally or that he even just tried to scare or roost the kid with dirt.

The only thing we know for sure that the kid was stupid and now he's dead. Other cars were barely able to avoid him, but he still stepped in front of traffic, and Tony wasn't able to avoid him.

Stewart was most likely trying to roost him with dirt and misjudged the distance and or the kid stepped closer to Stewart's car.

My gut tells me this is exactly what happened. But we will never know.

You steer those dirt track cars A LOT (mostly) with the throttle, like drifting. Giving the car gas is the only way to change the angle of the car to turn left more.

Those cars are also difficult to see out of, difficult to control, and its hard to see at night races. I greatly feel for the family but Ward almost got hit by the white car, and ran further down the track onto the racing line, at night while in a black suit. Not a really smart move on his part and I'm sure Tony didn't see him until the last minute where he turned the car right to not make the car sideways and as wide, to avoid hitting him.

You don't expect people to be on track like that and Ward went from next to his car to the middle of the track very quickly, and I doubt the spotter predicted that.

Its a terrible tragedy but you haveto take responsibility as a driver to not put your own life at unnecessary risk. Whose fault would it be to run out onto a live shooting range wearing camo, or walk onto a busy freeway at night? That's exactly what happened...

I wonder if other footage angles will popup shortly. Surely that's not the only camera out there in operation. Somehow I feel theres going to be other footage from a different angle come out in the future. It can either save TS's ass or incriminate him. We'll see.
