Here in MD (right outside of DC), the cost of Mobil 1 10w30 is between $5.50 and 6.00/quart! Yikes...

I typically change my own oil, but I had the dealer do a change for me recently on my other car and they had a special at $60 for Mobil 1, which I thought was pretty steep anyway (normally 80 or 90). Anyway, assuming 6 quarts, that's somewhere between $33-36, plus a quality filter, so we're talking nearly 40-43 in parts alone...

Dang....................... That's an expensive DIY oil change!!!

What's M1 cost in your area?

I buy my M1 synthetic at WalMart in the 5 qt. jug. Around $20. Ironically, Sams Club who is supposed to be cheaper, sells 6 single qts for around $30.

Local Wallyworld wants about 25-27 or so for the 4 quart! BTW, isn't a 4 quart, not a 5 quart...

I have worked for several dealers and they will charge more for Mobil 1 than Wal Mart or a local parts store because they do not purchase bulk quanities. The dealers order as needed from a small parts supplier (PAPA, NAPA etc), the part supplier has to deliver it and the dealer marks it up from the parts supplier retail. I would suggest bringing your own supply of Mobil 1 to the dealer. They will not mind at all....just DO NOT bring a oil filter too. (kind of like going to Denny's, ordering an omellete w/ your own eggs, cheese etc)

I just paid $24.67 for a FIVE quart jug of 10w-30 Mobil 1 High Endurance at Walmart. They also had Five quart jugs of 10w-30 Mobil 1 (regular formula) for about $21 to $22. Florida prices plus tax. I haven't seen any Four quart jugs here yet.

I think the lesson here is the packaging cost more then the product:). Single quart pricing is outragous:eek:

I have averaged about $21-22 for the 5 quart jug in NY.

Both Costco and Sam's Club in my area currently charge $27.99 for a case of six quarts of Mobil 1, either 5W30 or 10W30. Both were about four bucks cheaper a year ago.

My dealer actually prefers that I bring my own oil. They don't stock synthetic 10W30 - I think the NSX is the only Acura vehicle for which 10W30 is the recommended viscosity - so if I don't bring my own oil, they have to send someone out to the store for it. Of course, I'm happy to oblige...

Another data point:

- Wall Mart offers 5 quart jugs of Mobil1 10W30 synthetic for $20.97 - the price hasn't changed significantly for as long as I can remember. I go through gallons of it between multiple vehicles and I prefer the jugs.

- Retailers like Autozone and shucks tend to up-mark oil significantly, as brake pads and other maintenance items are their bread and butter. In fact there was a special on discovery about Auto Zone not long ago and there business model. I've never seen jugs at these auto retail outlets, they just have the single quart containers on the shelf or boxes of six at no further discount. It is there where I have seen $6 for a quart of Mobil1 oil, usually followed by a blank stare across the check-out counter in disbelief when they ask for $37+ for 6 of them.

- Several other vehicles post manufacturer reccomend viscosity at 10W30 for averate climates, including the S2000, Miata, Saab, Firebird (3.8's), a few DSM's, etc...

Not really on the Mobil 1 subject, but related to oil pricing. I purchase the Chevron 10w30 at costco for my daily driver. In October, the 12 quart box sold for right around $14, now in January the same oil is up over $17 there. Pretty significant price increase in just 12 weeks.

Oops! I meant the only Acura vehicle for which 10W30 is preferred. Previous post edited.
