working out - and how to get back into it?

What time did you usually do it? I got a running schedule a while back that was right after work and after doing that and taking a shower and then getting dinner i was wondering where some of my night went. I ended up stopping b/c my mother stole the treadmill back but I was thinking I wouldn't feel that way if I did it first thing in the morning and just woke up earlier to do it. Afternoon exercise is tough.

I used to work out almost every day, and was really cut and built.

But thanks to my crazy work and travel schedule, I hardly have time to work out (and even to drive my NSX).

Now I'm serious about getting back into it.

Anyone here re-start a serious work-out routine, and have any tips / tricks?

Depending on how long the hiatus was, go easy, light cardio and weights for the first week or so and try to ignore feelings like, man this is too light or easy and I am getting nothing. You are training your bod to get back into the rigor of working out. Most people try to jump back in with both feet so to speak and end up getting injured or basically being so sore they dread going back. Go easy at first, its totally cliche' but very true and you'd be amazed how many people over look it.

I'm in the same situation. I start at the Fire Department in a month, and I'm not even close to the shape I need\want to be. I started getting to the gym again three weeks ago. Finally broke down and bought an iPod Shuffle - music helps keep me motivated. If you can find someone to work out with regularly, all the better - helps keep you motivated. Like NSXrunner said, start out easy. I've been running a mile (8 minute), spending an hour lifting, running a mile (7 minute) and then walking\jogging another mile.

Set this as an appointment on your calendar, and treat it as such - don't cancel it. If you're making it 3 days a week, great. If you can do 5, alternating muscle groups, even better.

All I can say is that it's very (very!) tempting to go back to where you left off, both in intensity and weight. Don't over do it. That's the best advice I can give. I've strained and pulled many muscles jumping back into my routine too quickly. Start off very light and progressively work your way back. Also make sure to warm up adequately prior to lifting heavy weights. I like to get a light sweat going with some light cardio, but each will have their own. Just treat yourself like your NSX after a long duration in storage.

Best way to get back into it is self discipline. Its all about discipline and how much you want it. You have to make yourself get your ass to the gym everyday. It's tough, but it can be done. Make a commitment and follow through. If you aren't that committed, you might as well not even start. So many people think they can half ass it.....it never works if you do that. Consistency is the key.

If I were you, I'd start lifting high weight low reps coupled with a strict diet and a protein supplement. Take a "before" picture of yourself. You'll start seeing results in less than a month. Once the results start to show, then you're golden. Take an "after" picture and compare. You'll find it easier and easier to get to the gym because you know that you're making progress.

The first month is always the hardest, but some discipline will get you there. If you want, I'll post before and after pictures of myself when I let myself slip while I was still in college. I buckled down and got consistent and I look pretty good once again. I had to give up fast food and drinking so much, but it was worth it. Not only will you look great, but your blood pressure will drop off the face of the earth and you'll feel great.

Once you are the size you want, start with the cardio. 35 minutes every other day coupled with a lo/no fat diet. Dont' eat carbs after 7pm. The bike is good, but there is no substitute for good old fashioned running. You'll lose bodyfat quickly if you stay disciplined.

If you need any info just PM me..I can give you great routines and some places to get the hookup on protein supplements. Good Luck.

i'm wondering the same.

I've been down all winter, pulling allnighters and such for school/work and gained 20lbs :-o over the winter...

I'm going to Biluxi, Miss. for spring break to help rebuild houses from Katrina and need to start doing some work now, just so I'm not dead after 3 days.

The time to workout is the problem. I literally work 12-20 hours a day, depending on deadlines...

I spent the last few years nursing rotator cuff injuries in both my shoulders. Five months ago, I decided I was healthy enough to get back into lifting heavy and I'm almost as strong as ever.
