Won't rev past 5400 and jerky acceleration - 92 NSX 280K miles

I got a 92 NSX manual with 280k miles. It was blowing blue smoke in the exhaust and milky oil texture. Thought it was blown head gasket but turned out it was just moisture from valve covers being off for over a month.

So issue 1: The car won't rev past 5400 with TCS on and off. It does it in neutral and in gear.
I'm getting 3 long blinks followed by 6 short blinks for CEL.
4 long blinks and followed by 9 short blinks for TCS light.

I'm going to replace the fuel filter and clean the injectors in attempt to resolve jerky acceleration. Any one is familiar with these codes?

Edit: found some resource regarding these codes and the same symptoms Im experiencing. (bad ground?)

Issue 2: Also, Im hearing some clunk rotational noise as I break. Not sure if its coming from the front or the rear. New front tie rod ends and rear control arm ends. Possibly coming from the axle?

edit: turns out to be the axle shaft is making noise and movement when brake is applied. I made the video on the jack stands in first gear with ebrake on.

Try disconnecting the TCS completely (behind the driver seat). Also sounds like you're a good candidate for the SOS ABS upgrade. Worth the time to install and money. I had a similar symptom after I installed the SOS ABS upgrade and missed tightening some grounds under the hood. Not sure about the clunking noise while braking. Maybe some suspension bushings are starting to perrish. You might want to take a close look at the compliance pivots.

unplugging TCM and reset clock fuse didn't do the trick. Its still not revving over 5000 rpm. Seems like it doesn't have an exact rpm limit. varies from 4500 to 5400. Any more input regarding 36 CEL and 49 TCS light? getting a bit rough idle and jerky acceleration.

Not an expert by any means but this sounds like a fuel supply issue.
As I recall your car has been sitting for a long time.
Perhaps you have gummed up injectors, a plugged fuel filter, or other fuel flow issues?
Have you had a chance to service your fuel supply system?

JD Cross,

I haven't been able to service fuel system. I went with troubleshooting the ground issue first. And found a 7.5 fuse for starter signal that has a bad connection. I just removed the glove box and about the test the ground in there. It doesn't make sense that the car won't rev over 5000 with TCS on and off. Is there anywhere in the NSX service manual that list out all the ground wires?

I think you are right to eliminate electrical items first.
If you go to the page 23-15 in the service manual you'll see the start of the ground location info.
It carries on until page 23-46 and where ever a G is shown on each circuit that is where the ground is.

Obviously, I'm new here, so take with a grain of salt...

I had a similar issue on a previous vehicle. Issue turned out to be a faulty camshaft position sensor.

perfect! thanks a lot man. G405 (to body ground via TCS control unit) on page 23-34. Gonna check them out later this weekend.

haha i think i know you from 8thcivic.com

Can you elaborate what you mean by similiar issue?

(Most likely - Though I don't tend to frequent there much anymore, since AutoGuide bought it from Webby.)

The issue I experienced was very similar, if not identical (at least judging by your description.) The car would "buck" under acceleration, at random. I never attempted to see how high the engine would rev when that symptom occured, and instead babied it home until I worked out what exactly the issue was. I replaced the ECU (due, in part, to another issue), and the TCM (automatic vehicle). Symptoms persisted until the CPS was replaced. $30 part, in my case .... After a $1k ECU.

Needless to say, I learned my lesson. (If uncertain, begin troubleshooting with the cheaper parts first, and work upwards.)

pull the tcs fuse in the engine compartment. i think your in limp mode. i was working on my 92 the other day and noticed the fuse for the tcs was missing. lights for abs and tcs have always been on, but it dont bother me. anyways, i put in a fuse, then went for a ride and it acted like yours does, i pulled the fuse back out, and it runs fine again. worth a try, and easy to test.

All the grounds i have checked seemed to be good. Its not the tcs fuse either. Tcs works. I put the rear wheels in the air. And drive with tcs on, green tcs light blinks when ECU think there isnt traction. Im at lost why its not revving past 5000 rpm.

more than likely in limp mode. but i thought i read limp mode was 4k rpm.

That does not sound good. The grease in the CV boots probably dried up and something in the joints broke. Time to get the axle replaced/rebuilt. While you are at it, check the driver side as well.

well, it developed a new issue today. Tachometer doesn't work when it's cold. The needle sticks at 1k rpm when its cold and doesn't move when i give it throttle. When its warm, it works fine except still having that rev limiter issue with CEL 36.

Also, im looking into how to rebuild the passenger side axle myself. Raxles won't do it. Appliedmotorsports rebuilt axle cost as much as a new OEM one. I know I could order the driver side from O'reilly for $79.99. I also found info that legend's inner cup and tripod would fit on NSX's passenger side axle. Now the question is which inner cup and tripod from Legend can I use on NSX passenger side axle? #5 or #6 in this picture? Any way I can find replacement for #6 (mostly the joint) on NSX? i'm also wondering if the tripod joint on left side is the same as the one on the right side (different part number) on NSX? A legend axle can be bought for $80 so that should save a lot of money from buying a new NSX axle from dealer.

I had the same issue and replaced everything under the sun.

It went in to garages, could not fix the issue.

I started replacing random bits here and there i saw on prime.

I then got so fed up of the issue, i bulk bought new sensors, relays etc etc replaced loads of things. Went away.

One thing i replaced was the throttle body, because it bulk purchased i tried switching the throttle body back as it was a bigger bore and the issue came back.

Don't believe it was the motor. I think it was either the throttle posistion or the tps although i had tried loads of different tps's
