Woman Fired For Missing Work After Seeing Husband Off To War

I think that it's pretty damn lame of them to do this, especially with no warning.

"He added that other factors were involved in the decision but he declined to elaborate."

Even if there were other factors, this was a bad move by this company. If they wanted to get rid of her, they could have merely reprimanded her for this and then found another reason later on. Now, they are in the news an look pretty bad in peoples' eyes.

The good news is that someone will surely offer her a job, in a P.R. move that will sway public opinion in the opposite direction than her former employers.

That's right in my back yard. My local news interviewed the owner and he said one of the reasons she was let go was that she didn't need the internet to perform her job duties, yet she still visited 6000 sites a month on a three day work week. No other employee came close to that, so it appears there are some other issues at the bottom of this, however even the employer admitted that the timing wasn't right.

....I was thinking that they were a serious bunch of a$$holes if they fired her for only the absense alone.

I don't think it was simply that, the guy interviewed mentioned other issues but wasn't going to go into detail. I think the media is blowing this way out of proportion and just looking for a story to sensationalize.

The article tells more:

Suzette Boler had received permission to take off work the week leading up to her husband's departure
Boler returned home from Indiana on the night of Oct. 16
She said she had told her bosses that she would try to return on Oct. 17 but if she could not, she would definitely be back Oct. 18

She takes a full WEEK off before her husband leaves. Then she decides to take off an additional day because of the "emotional ordeal".

While I have no doubt that seeing your spouse off to war isn't an easy thing to do, having a week off of your part time position, and then deciding to continue to take time off certainly doesn't help her situation. And she was fired for not showing up the day AFTER she saw her husband off, not the day of.

I can sympathize with the company, esp. if there were other reasons.
