Window won't roll up - What to buy & where?

Hi,

My driver's window won't roll up. It has been slow for quite some time and now only goes up an inch or two. It goes down quite well. My girlfriend can get the window all the way up by pushing towards the rear.

I did a search on the site and found the technical service bulletin "Popping noise from Window Regulator".

My question:

What do I need to buy to fix this?

Are there other things I should fix while in the door?

Where do I get the items?

Thanks

I used super high-temp urea grease, that I purchased at my local Acura dealer, and lubed up the window components per the service bulletin's instructions. In addition to that, I completely re-lubed window rails - that helped by far the most. My windows now work like new.

If you have a '91 or '92 you should HIGHLY consider purchasing the window fix-it thingies.

Fix-it Thingies: here or here.

If you have more specific questions, feel free to PM me.

The biggest difference I noticed was by cleaning out all the old grease from the tracks. This made a bigger difference than putting in new grease (which you have to do also, of course). Tweaking the adjustment may help, but mostly I'd bet on the old gunk in the tracks.

Yup, I agree. You should clean out all the old grease before putting in the new grease... that's what I meant by "re-lubed." That old stuff gets really gummy! I've also heard of great results from doing the adjustments; I believe there is a service bulletin that pertains to that.

I agree with you too. The first time I did this I just wiped it out a little and added more grease. I finally took it all apart and cleaned it really well before relubing. So I wanted to point out that that was the important part, which you already knew.

Very good point indeed, that is probably THE most important part of the process!

hehe, I hope you're taking notes cfra7! Just in case you missed it... clean those rails!!!

To clean the rails and such did you take out the entire window regulator or just thru the door? I tried to find that Urea grease couldnt get it at a local Auto parts is this an acura/ honda part only? I atempted along time ago to put high temp grease but it didnt work so well do you guys think this other type of grease will work that much better?

I've ben lazy in addressing this, but my 91 has had new regulators installed, so is there still a need for me to put the window fix it thingies on yet assuming the regulators have been replaced? Is there such a thing as an "updated regulator"? My windows aren't fast, but I combat that by just not putting them down, but this is on my to do list.

I didn't remove the rails, I just cleaned them in place. There is enough room, it just takes some funky wrist action (). I purchased the urea grease from Acura... I think the part number is in the service bulletin. I'm not sure if it's a Honda only part, but from what I've heard it seems to be. I would be careful about using a different type of grease as it may be of a dramatically different composition. That's just my opinion though.

EDIT: Here is the service bulletin --> page1 page2

It says the part number for the Urea grease is 08798-9002

There is a such thing as updated window regulators, but you won't know if you have the newer models unless you look at them - which means taking off the door panels. I have a '93 and my regulators are already the updated type. Here is a page in the FAQ that has the info you need.

This little DIY project was actually quite easy. Removing the door panels was a snap (there is a lot of info here on Prime on how to do it).

I have one window fix-it thingy that I never used. I only bought one on accident and I ended up not even needing it. If anybody needs one just let me know.

HMMM well the high temp grease works just not to the standard I want, I guess I will be going to Acura and buying the Urea grease and cleaning up my rails and re-installing it

I didn't feel like I got the rails cleaned properly until I removed them. You have to remove almost everything in the door to to this. It's not (quite) as bad as it sounds. Make sure you follow the manual and mark the positions of the adjustment screws if you do this. Couldn't hurt if you can figure out a way to remember how many turns each one had on it, too, otherwise you have to readjust the window by eyeball, or by removing a bunch of trim to go by the manual, which I wasn't up for at the time. I used high temp grease -- I wonder how much better urea grease would be. Don't know.

No.

In the FAQ (under Troubleshooting - Power Windows) you can see photos of the plastic clip that breaks on the old regulators, how the fix-it thingies replace it, and how the new regulators have a metal piece instead of the plastic clip.

Yes, but it's the same thing as any new regulator installed since 1993.

Would John Vasos know what went into my car as AoB put them in when Jeff owned the car?

How do you adjust the windows, is there a DIY instructions to re-align them or adjust them?

The factory procedure is in the shop manual. I recall seeing someone's comments of how to "eyeball" it without taking off all of the trim, etc. But that's going to be a little trial and error. Depends if you want to do it exactly by the manual, or fiddle with it a while. There are only a couple of adjustments.

Probably. He certainly ought to be able to look up the date it was replaced.

Yes. Open your service manual, and look at the table of contents in the Body section. You will find a page reference for Doors - Glass Adjustment. If your manual is for the '91 NSX, it's on page 20-13.

I have new regulators (purchased in '99 I believe) and was shocked to find that they still had the plastic retainers . So I purchased the fix-its and as I was looking for the procedure to replace them I ran across the recall notice from Acura. It shows that the difference was the addition of tabs that "frame" the retainers all the way around so they can't distort - but still using the same white plastic retainers(?). Is that right? or should I still replace them with the fix-its?

As long as you have the box-like tabs that completely frame the plastic retainers all is well - you don't need the fix-it-thingies. I'm pretty sure that all of the window regulators ('91-'05) have a plastic retainer, the only difference, as you mentioned, is the framing.
