Window Motors?

My windows, both passenger and driver side are going up very slowly. I’m having some audio work done on the doors, so they will be open. I figured it might be a good opportunity to fix the windows. I’m assuming the problem is the age of the window motors and it’s assembly. Assuming the motors are the problem, are these difficult to change, and are the parts available? Also are they crazy expensive? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

There is a design compromise that is most of the problem. This has been somewhat corrected by the Hugabuga window regulator fix. Search Prime for his thread. But i would first start by cleaning the tracks that the windows ride on. After many years the grease cakes and offers up substantial resistance to movement. Clean them real good and then inspect the nylon slides that sit in these rails. Replace any that are broken. I believe these are available OEM and I also think Science of Speed may have them in stock. This will help alot before having to go the Hugabuga fix.

I just got a new regulator and motor from Marc at Mita in Japan. Only three weeks from order to delivery and the price was a little over $400 inclusive of freight. About 35% cheaper than buying stateside. The motor was fine and so were the tracks but the gear/cable assembly finally gave up the ghost. Good luck.
 
As noted, the actual motor is not the problem. Cleaning the regulator drive and replacing and greasing the guides on the regulator drive may be the best that you can do as I don't think that Hugo is still producing his regulator upgrade kit. You can try sending him a PM to see if he is still in the business.

When cleaning and regreasing, use the ultra expensive Honda urea grease. Stinky; but, long lasting and you don't want to be doing this on a regular basis.

It helps to clean and grease the tracks that the window glass rides in; but, this is more difficult because of access. Don't mess with the adjustment of the glass tracks unless you are up for the ultra involved process of aligning the door window glass when you put things back together.

Finally, you can purchase new regulators; but, if you don't mind driving around for a couple of weeks with your windows taped in place there is also a company that rebuilds the regulators that owners have reported back positively on. However, you are going to have to search through the threads to find their name.

It's not really the motors. And, it's not really even the cables/grease either. Kaz posted a great blog over on the UK site that describes the root of the problem- the rails themselves. Basically, using the windows and leaving them full-up over time bends/warps the rails so that they will resist the tracking of the window as it moves. This is because the window not only moves up and down, it moves in and out, putting tension on the aluminum rails. Thus, in Japan, NSX specialists and the NSX Refresh Center replace all of the rails as part of the window service. This completely solves the slow window problem. The advice is that, after you raise the windows, pop the switch down for just a fraction of a second, which will relieve some tension on the window rail.

The only thing that sucks is that this is really, really expensive.

My passenger is slow going up. I decided to spend the money for a new one. They were less than $400 including freight from Mitamotorsports.com. I figured $400 per window is a small price to pay to enjoy the nsx for another 20 years. Plus I have spare to rebuild with Hugabuga thingy.
 
The cars are old and it's a 50/50 craps shoot if your motor is tired or if re-greasing and replacing the guides is enough.

I re-greased my windows multiple times over the past 10 years with the Honda Urea Grease. I'll NEVER use that stuff again. After about 2-3 years it turns into hard plastic. I now use this:

If your budget allows, i'd also replace the motors while you're in there to hopefully never have to touch it again. I forget who is rebuilding the factory regulators but once I find out, i'll send him my old regulators so I can have a rebuilt set on hand.
