Just want to make sure these sizes will work

215/40/17 and 285/30/18

I used a tire calculator which suggested a 30 profile would be a better match on a 285.

Just wondering if it would look daft the 30 profile rear and 40 profile front, will one look balloon in comparison?

It's a shame you can't buy 235/35!! argh...!!

The TCS will work okay on a '94-05, but may experience problems on a '91-93, particularly as the rears wear.

The handling will be awful, due to the excessive stagger (difference in tread width, front vs rear).

I wouldn't do it. Especially not when there are plenty of good tires available in 255/35-18 (for '94-05) and 265/35-18 (for '91-93).

First off, how wide is your rear rim? I once tried 275's and the car handled like crap, felt slower, and the TCS always kicked in around turns. I now only use265/35/18 which is the one of the closest sizes to the OEM 17's.

What if i ran a 235/40/17 up front?

The car isn't lowered.

I realize it will rub but can't be that bad as people still run this setup.

If i could put up with a little rubbing would 235/40/17 work better with 285/30/18?

I'm really keen on a 285 rear.

I ran a 285 when I first got my car. Sold my stock wheels and ran a 18x10 with a 17x8 front. the tire dealer said a 285 would work great. It didn't work at all. They did look good but the handling for me didn't feel right.

Running a 285/30/18 over the more recommended 265/35/18 is a bad idea because:
1) Its less tall and could cause TCS issues
2) Has a larger width which increases increases stagger and therefore understeer
3) Most 285/30/18 tires cost considerably MORE $$$ than the 265/35/18 counterparts (sometimes over $100 more per tire!)

the 235 would work better with the rear size in terms of grip....the rub is subjective..i use 235 on my track set and do put some street miles on getting to and from....depends on your tolerance. Also it will limit your ability to lower the car,and may hit the fender liner along the fender rim.most of the rub is actualy on the inner wheel well.

It rubs, big time. The only people I know who put up with it are people who use that size for their track tires, on which they don't mind some rubbing because they almost never have to turn the wheel very far, certainly not to full lock. For street tires, it's a really bad idea.

However... It sounds like you just want to do what you want to do, and you don't want to listen to the advice from anyone who has tried the sizes you're asking about and found problems with them. So if you're not going to listen to the advice given here, why are you even asking?
