Why do so many owners modify the NSX?

I’m getting tired of winter and anxious to get my car on the road so I thought I’d stir up the pot and ask … why do so many NSX owners want to modify their cars? I’m not just talking about changing the wheels/tires or exhaust. I’m talking about the different wings, body kits, carbon fiber parts, stereos/navs, etc. people add to their cars. I’m not trying to slam other people and their cars since I do believe we are all entitled to our opinions. I’m just hoping to spark a lively discussion to better understand why folks modify the NSX. We can save the discussion about performance/engine modifications for another thread.

When I bought my NSX I fell in love with the clean, sexy styling of the car and other than different wheels, I’ve kept it as stock as possible. Some of the NSXs I’ve seen on prime don’t even look like an NSX anymore. Are we ashamed of our cars? I rarely see exterior modifications done to P & F cars … even the old ones … so why do we change the looks of the NSX? If you owned a P or F car (and some Prime members do) would you modify the car to the same extent as the NSX?

Is the NSX a classic? Not sure if it is now but it will be as time goes on. Would you modify the looks of a classic muscle car? Would you throw on a body kit and big wing on a 69 Camaro? Would you add that stereo with built in Nav and huge sub woofers to a 65 Mustang? In some areas of the country you would be shot if you did so.

In my opinion, modified NSXs have lowered the perception of the car so they are now lumped in with the CIVIC, WRX, 350Z, Focus Tuner crowd and not with the Ferraris and Porsches the NSX was designed to beat. Nothing against the tuner crowd as they have have some pretty awesome cars and if I wanted to hang with this crowd I would not have bought a NSX.

I drive a 17 year old semi classic exotic supercar and not an aftermarket kit car and proud of it.

Ya, I was about to say , but you beat me to it!

For me modifying the car was all about what I want. I don't care for your opinion, love it or hate it its what I want:smile:

Dan, I started off the same way as you when I bought my NSX...

I started off with little things that enhanced the characteristics of the NSX.

I lowered it, installed thicker sway bars, and installed the strut tower bar.

But some of the stuff in the car is dated that needed modernizing.

HIDs - we all know they are better than the regular headlight.

Stereo - wanted some more features other than a tape deck and a cd changer that could only play cds. I wanted to be able to use my ipod, play dvds, and cd/mp3. Since this was a late upgrade getting Navi for the price was a no brainer.

Seats - I always like the 02+ NSX and their option of color matching the seats, so I did it.

NSX-R hood and wing - I really like the look of the NSX-R so thats why I did it.

Header and exhaust - I did it to get back some free HP. I still went for a quiet exhaust over a loud one to keep it stock sounding as possible

I don't think I went overboard with my mods. I really respect a clean stock car. Regardless of make and model. But I think I did a fairly good job in keeping the NSX as stock looking as possible. I think in many ways, people may think my NSX still looks stock.

We are individialists, so even though the NSX is already rare, we want something that is even more special, as unique as possible.

Dan.......I have to agree with you. I bought mine with a customs sound system and lowering kit - the rest is stock and will remain that way  Oh, also has some custom dings and scratches due to lots of use.

I think mild mods (suspension, rims, headers, exhaust) just update a beautiful car.

Once you get into FI, body kits, wings etc, you can loose the "feel" or "look" of the NSX. Some of the cars are stunning, but don't really resemble an NSX anymore. Veillside is a good example of that.

I hate driving stock cars. Even my minivan has a set of rims.

The NSX lends itself to modifications. When I bought mine it was after 14 years of lusting after one. I started easily first with lowering (coilovers) and wheels. I always thought the chassis was much better than the engine's output, so i went the FI route. After that all bets were off.

Its a Japanese car, and over there there aren't as many sacred cows as there seem to be here. No one will shoot you for adding a wing to an F430 there. I see hotted up Lambos, F and P cars all the time in Tokyo. If I wanted a car I'd revere, keep indoors all day and wipe with a diaper I'd pick up an MB Gullwing or E-Type.

I used to share your same thoughts but I admit the mod bug catches you before you know it. I wanted to keep mine stock and still do in a way. so far I have added a smartenna - (the only non OEM piece) the other mods have been OEM parts but in the NSX-R direction. When I do make a mod I keep the Original parts so I can return the car back if needed.

With that said I am trying hard to keep my mods to what Honda has done with the car, nothing aftermarket unless it's a direct replica of an OEM part. The only struggle I have is in the wheel department, this thought process gives me grief because I really like some of the aftermarket rims out there.

It's all about individualization and your own personal taste. The only thing that really matters is what makes the owner enjoy it.

I've had my car 8 years and when I first bought it back in 99. I too was pretty much against modifying my car. However its nice to freshen up the car with a few mods here and there, be it cosmetic, or functional. My first mod was the EXH because the stock seemed just too quiet. Then came the intake, wheels, and a Type-R spoiler. Other than that not much, although some headers will be coming this summer. Then a Type-R hood. Other than that, I will be staying close to OEM as much as possible though as I am one of those that feel massive body kits are going overboard, but then thats me and me alone. Others feel differently and thats their thing. To each their own.

To each their own.

+1.

All NSXs are beautiful. Except Bio's. His car is so ugly he needed to put it in a cage, or a cage in it. I can't remember. It was supercharged with ugly. It was so ugly, it grew wings to fly away.

Whatever!

At least my NSX wasnt fighting for 6 years to get away from me! This is what your car said as you drove by me countless times:

"HEEELLLLLPPPPP MEEEEEEEEE". It said something like it wasnt able to pull any looks from chicks because of some mope behind the wheel. That poor NSX, spent its glory days with a chastity belt on! Hopefully Dave will liberate it from your opressive ways.

But I modified mine because I knew, even when I bought it, that there were so many things that I wanted to improve upon.

It is easier to bring performance to a reliable car than it is to bring reliability to a higher performing one, and the NSX chassis was the one that I wanted.

Hmmm love this quote might have to shamelessly borrow it from time to time now. Thanks muahaha!

I once heard our cars talking. You're FrakenNSX said, "Why does my owner keep slicing parts off of me? Doesn't he love me? You are still beautiful, the way Soichirosan wanted." Mine replied, "You can't blame him, you're yellow. If he bought you, what could he possibly know about NSXs? If you ask my owner, he'll wipe all the dead bugs off your nose."

And yours said:

"all my owner ever does is wipe me off. He thinks I look cool all shiny. Im a car dammit! Just cuz he goes to the Spa every second day doesnt mean that I have to! Its like he thinks Im one of those gay blue NSXs."

For one thing, I don't have a wife.
Women turn me off! lol Not!
Just can't find the right one like some Dan guys.
Anyways, Dan, spend some of those bucks of yours and mod that thing.
Get a nice key chain or even a gold necklace for yourself!
Bling Bling.

Hmm, I modify because I couldn't afford a 02+ so I upgrade cosmetic stuff like side skirts and rear valence. It's the more affordable way to go. Plus certain mods I feel enhance the NSX. Like the HID kit thats a must have. The stereo, that a almost must have. Plus my seats are old and wrinkly so I needed new ones.

It a disease once you start changing and upgrading one thing, you’ll start changing another… and then another… and then another... until ∞ & beyond...

I love upgrading and changing things on the NSX one of the most user friendly, and a pretty easy to work on for the do-it yourselfers out there. Not to mention one of the best communities to deal with, such a wealth of information here.
