Why are there so many incompetent drivers on the road?
Today when I asked myself this question yet again, I tried to answer it… I was trying to put it in context and came up with this:
I am a naturally skilled driver, it comes naturally to me, and it’s fun. Many others obviously aren’t naturals and it’s not fun for them.

I am a terrible brain surgeon or rocket scientist.

Take, say, a brilliant brain surgeon who just doesn’t have the natural skill to pilot a car deftly through traffic or rain or snow, has no idea what the tyres are doing and no idea what the car next to him is doing or going to do. But he is brilliant at knowing what effect cutting this or that inside someone’s head will do.
Or take, say, a brilliant rocket scientist who is hopeless at how much the people way ahead in front are braking and so hits the brakes too hard for the situation. But he is brilliant at numbers, see’s patterns in numbers and can mix a mean jet fuel cocktail.

I have nothing against these particular professions, they are only an example for the sake of this example. Could use any other profession.

But do I spend half an hour in the operating room doing brain surgery with the other surgeons before I go to work or come home?
No.
Do I spend half an hour calculating rocket fuel ratios and trajectories with the other rocket scientists before going getting to work or getting home every day?
No.

If I did, the brain operations or rockets would be a complete disaster. AND also very annoying for the doctors and scientists who would be yelling at me for getting in their way and making dumb moves, or dangerous moves and generally completely in the way of the competent people trying to do these things. I would mess up the mood of all these competent people and make their live miserable for the time I was there next to them.

BUT, these very same driving idiots ARE on our roads being completely incompetent and dangerous and getting in the way.

It’s not fair.

I am not allowed to enter their areas, why are they allowed to enter mine? There are busses, trams, taxis and trains for them. There are aspirin, bandages and iodine for me.

It’s just not fair. If I had a country, I would insist all drivers take a skid pad test, a rally course, a racing circuit course and a “zen” course to test their ESP about what the other people on the road are about to do before they actually do it. The passing grades would be marked with a colour on their licence plates so other drivers would be aware of the good and poor drivers. And certain colours would not be allowed in the left lane etc…
I would gladly stay away from their operating rooms and rocket labs.

OK, finished.

Hey Peter,

I don't have time right now, but I would really like to link your previous post about how competent European’s are at driving and how safe it is speeding in Europe... Would probably be biggest back-peddle since Napoleon’s at Waterloo....

I always chuckle when one uses my occupation for an analogy to something .... smile .. (wish I could write legibly )

I like the thought of colored plates ....

Here on prime many are always asked .. Hey I just got my NSX what is the first mod I should do .. suspension ? wheels ? . the answer from solid prime members is always...spend your money first on a driving school...best money you will ever spend.... after a couple driving courses ( for myself ) , I guess the general population has no concept of what can be learned through these venues.

I sometimes wonder with some patients of mine.... they might not be in this position (literally) :( if they had taken time to do the above mentioned scenario

although with all said...... I do agree more with NsXmas's Post

Ken...

Multi tasking is an issue,,however IMO the most dangerous and poor quality drivers are the drivers that are afraid of driving and sit in their cars 6 inches from the steering wheel with white knuckles firmly griping the wheel  these people scare the crap outta me I see them all the time....they refuse to merge, they wait until everybody in a 3 mile radius has driven home and started eating dinner before they pull out of a driveway,....and they NEVER look ahead to see what is going to happen or possibly happen in the road ahead...they are fixated and scared to death of their car and everybody else in a 6 ft area around them...

What were you saying about incompetent drivers in Belgium again mate???
lol..

OK, OK, you got me! Mate.
But I moved here after doing a study in the world of where the best place in the world would be to drive and still have industry, jobs etc. Everything I said before is still true, happily.
But there ARE some incompetents on the road, but thankfully not as many as in the states OR Oz.
But you GOT me!
BTW, When are you going to come over and visit so I can show you REAL driving freedom (with SOME incompetence like, Gesus Christ, you should see the way they take round-abouts here. MORONS. They don’t use their indicators when going left!!! Try that in any other country, European country, civilised country, and they would have an accident and 20 people swearing at them in a minute! Unbelievable! Why don’t they just disconnect their blinkers if they don’t have to use them! And they drive around the OUTSIDE of the round-about!!! Even to go left! Oh man. Bloody lethal).

Aaaaah. That helped.
Well, most of the rest is nice. I guess should appreciate it.

If you're in Belgium...you've got nothing on US drivers.
Yes, I am thankful.

I love this one!!!!!

People are multi-tasking, not focusing on driving.
LOL!

I’m sorry Ken, you’re right, I really didn’t mean you doctors, I was only picking a profession at random, actually doctors would have good spatial awareness or hand to eye coordination so that was a bad choice. My dentist circuit races.
I humbly apologise. To the rocket scientists among us too.
Even hairdressing wouldn’t be a good example. With all those sharp scissors.

Back-Peddle Pete:wink:

EXACTLY!!!!
how on earth did they ever pass the test, eh? (I just shake my head)

Maybe because license tests are WAY too easy to pass. Driving is a privilege, not a right... driver's tests shouldn't be made so that you can just blink an eye and pass.

As an autocrosser especially, I'm just scared thinking that most people have maybe 5 seconds of total experience with their car sliding/on the limit. Those 5 seconds are usually right before they hit something. How do we expect drivers to know how to handle emergency situations if they've never had to before until it happens out on the road?

FYI: There's not much to do in a US drivers test. You need to show you are using signals, you know how to 'full stop' upon a red light and stop sign. You know how to parrallel parking and back up. This is in Seattle, one of the busiest city in terms of traffic in US.

I heard some of driving test in US not even involves parking... (well, who cares about parking if you are living in middle of Montana?)

L5-S1NSX, Ken, you are right, the best mod for the nsx might as well a driving education. If not, at least a half day of autoXing just to tell yourself how incapable you really are... I had driven my other to AutoX many times but not yet with the nsx, partly because I don't want to admit I'm suck:tongue:

Ok, Smart Alec, Napoleon’s Waterloo wasn’t even in Belgium. Smarty pants.

Hehe, figure THAT one out… (WITHOUT using the internet…)(or asking Neo, who knows all about technicalities…)

You have driven a bit of autocross, that automatically means you DON’T suck.
If everybody were to do a little sliding around etc, then I believe everybody would be a better driver even the people I was talking about.

In Luxembourg all drivers tests includes a day at the slip course as part as their driving exam (started about 5 years ago, from memory, correct me if I’m off). They have to pass it to get their licence. This of course includes lessons by the instructors there on other things like accident avoidance etc (=looking at/understanding the other traffic). I’m sure some of the naturally un-gifted people are still not superman drivers, but I would think the level of their awareness of what the car is doing has gone up.
This would mean they know what other drivers (more skilled drivers) on the road can and will do, they have seen it on the course.
I guess that would make for a better driving.

German joke:
Q: Do you know why the Belgians have red and white licence plates?
A: Red and white are the colours for danger.

(Until recently, the Swedes drove on the left like the British)
Swedish joke:
When the Swedes changed to driving on the right, to make it simple for everybody, they divided the traffic.
The trucks went first, they changed on Saturday.
By the time Sunday came it was the cars turn to change over, but it was not problem, they had already learned.

Pete... Ok, LMAO now... I know EXACTLY your frustration! It's just that in the past you've lived in such a perfect bubble that it made my frustration even worse knowing that you weren't living with my daily battle with incompetence!!! Urghhh!

So, finally... Welcome to my world mate!!!

The same thing here in Brunei. Even my sister do it. I scolded her for not putting the signal on when going into the main road from our house. It made me think maybe the signal bulb cost around a thousand dollar that's why they never use it. Stupid people.

In Colorado, an average of 3 accidents happen when it snows even mildy. Read it somewhere.

4x4s don't realize even if your car moves, grips, and controls better, braking is still the same for all of us.

I drove in my S many days that had rims and low profile tires on. I get pressured by people left and right to speed up even when its not safe.
