Dang! I hate when this happens......

here

Structural Failure

If you play the video in slow-motion, you can see how the fuselage partially crumples in the wing area when the front gear touches down.

I'm no pilot, but isn't approach velocity something like 120? That looked like +150, and at a rather steep angle, on top of that.

Sky Guy - can you elaborate, as you are a pilot?

I have done a few no flap landings in our CRJs (the type has a long, long history of flap failures). Normal Vref speeds vary from 125 kts to 145 kts depending on landing weight, but for a flaps 0 landing you are looking at around 170 kts. You still should be able to touch down at 300 ft/min or less.

The plane in the video had the flaps down and couldn't tell if the slats were out, but it appears so... just a really bad landing. If Mesa Airlines flew MD80s I would have thought it was one of their pilots.

Knock-off/imitation fuselages & tails... (lol)

I've had a seat in the tail section before. I think I'll request a seat further forward next time!

Yeaaah... So, Skyguy, what's the 'safest' seat in the house?!?

(relatively safer than, hmmm, err- the tail!)

No real safe seat per-se'. But if you sit over the wing you get less tetter-totter motion when airborn & I've yet to see fuselage failure there.

BTW: That Pilot didn't even flare. His vertical velocity was beyond the structural limits of the MD-80.

anyone die??? Or was that some sort of training video"what NOT to do" portion???

It'll buff out.

But seriously, that looked like an aweful landing...damn. Came in WAY too fast, and didn't even bother to lose any of the velocity before touching down.

MD-80 breakoff

dead link now, but i have a copy saved. my memory of this incident
was that it was a test flight, aircraft flown outa envelope...a minor injury resulted, other than tailfeathers.

if wanted, you can find it here....slow link
