Who wants a Sequential Shifter?

Any aftermarket "sequential shifters" where it modifies the existing transmission is IMO not worth the time and money. True sequential transmissions are engineered from the ground up and have proprietary software that works in conjuction with the engine management system. Sequential transmissions start at $15,000 and can go up into the 6 figures.

Check it out. They don't list NSX on the English page yet but it's listed on Japanese page...(198000 Yen)

I don't know how good/useful/serious this thing is since all it is is a modified shifter but I figured it's interesting enough.

Don't confuse things with acuurate facts! He asked who WANTS one. I do!!

I'm putting it on my wish list, right after a bionic arm.

:-)

Sequential shifters are one thing; many racecars have them (including the JGTC NSXs), as do most motorcycles

Auto-manual systems that automatically engage the clutch, and handle more mundane tasks such as rev-matching (matching engine speed to wheel speed) -- such as the MM units in the Ferrari 360, 575M and Enzo, the SMGII unit in the BMW E46 M3, and even an option on the new MR2 Spyder (!) are another story.

IMO a sequential shifter without the auto-manual clutch is not worth it.

There's an interesting comparo in the current BMWCCA Roundel -- for SOME applications, SMG-II might not be the best.

To answer the question: yes I want it.

I think they should eliminate the slushbox sportshift (and the 3.0L motor) and make a sequential auto-manual an option

I've *always* wanted a sequential shifter. Problem? Cost.
The cheapest one I found was something like $11,000.00 and it was onloy built to handle low powered cars. 300hp or less.

They look cool, but for anyone who wants to drive their car on the street I certainly wouldn't recommend it. If the howling from the straight cut gears doesn't irritate the crap out of you, the jerky part throttle upshifts certainly will.

I guess I'll just settle for a F1 style F-360.

It is very hard to pick 2nd gear when you were trying to get 4th in a sequential shifter.

No... its not hard, its IMPOSSIBLE to go 5->2 with a sequential box

Assuming you really wanted to do this, you'd go 5->4->3->2 with 3 downshifts. Can you do this quickly enough, under threshold braking, with a manual clutch ?? With the auto-manual, you'd pull the 'down' paddle three, keeping one foot on the brake. Done correctly, you CAN go 5->2 with a manual box, just get the car slowed down enough.

The recent Roundel article suggests that while you DON'T need to lift off the gas when shifting an SMG-II box, a little breath (i.e., crunch your toes) helps keep things smoother.

Hewland makes a box that shoud work -- I think they used to equip the JGTC NSX race cars. RBT in Atlanta also has one (they make trannies for the Saleen S7 and the Pagani Zonda). $$$

I think that's what the next NSX needs! :-)

This is not a true sequential shifter as nothing is modified in the gear box. The only modification is that instead of shifting in the normal gate, you press up or down to shift a gear. A reciprocal gear within the unit actuates the gearbox linkage. You still use the clutch and everything is the same. However, the unit is side specific, so it would not work on a LHD NSX. In addition, last I heard, the NSX model was scraped as it was not possible to fit the components within the center tunnel. So, NSX production is undecided.
