I need help. I have a turbo on my car and 2 weeks ago there was white smoke coming out of the breather on the side of the engine. You know how you have a hose that goes from the side of the engine to the intake well I don't have one on my car and that was replaced with a breather. I am trying to explain this as best as I can cause I don't really know the terms for this parts. Well as I was saying there is white smoke coming out of the breather and I have no idea what is wrong with it. I went to take my car to a mechanic and he told me that I needed a new engine that it would cost 10,000 to fix. I was like no way the car runs fine and if my engine was gone why does it still run and I don't get no engine warning light. Well I just want to know if none of you have ever had this problem. I just don't want to get ripped off. do you guys have any idea what might have happen to the engine. Keep in mind that the car runs fine and it does not make no funny noises and all that has change is that white smoke coming out of the breather.

any help would be great

thanks.

There may be much more that he hasn't told you, by my initial response is "BS". Ask him to explain it to you, not in a simplified version but in a technical one while you take notes. Exactly what is wrong with the engine? What tests did he run for this diagnosis? etc. Post what he says here and take it somewhere else for a second opinion and compare notes.

You might also read the thread linked below. Your problem is not as severe but you are on the street not track.

Bottom line, it would be very hard to ring up a $10k bill on an engine that still runs fine and doesn't make any bad noises.

If it proves to be a scam or at least grossly exaggerated, please post the name of the shop so others can avoid it.

Good luck!

hmmm,

Me, I am werry of this...

does it smoke all the time now? from moment of crank?

remove the breather at idle, and cover the hole with your thumb.

is it building a fair amt of pressure?

then blip the throttle with your other hand, just mildly, is it building considerably more pressure?

examine your breather filter, does it smell of coolant? is it saturated after running at idle for about 15-20 min?

I dont see a 10K bill here, but I could see a 5K bill for heads if it blew...

have a leak down test done if your really worried...

it can blow, and cause this, and car will still feel strong, and no CEL. But it will get worse if it is...

not trying to go off the deep end, but it can happen, and smoke out of the breather is a sign of it... esp if it is smoking from moment of cranking...

Just wanted to give ya some things to check, let us know what happens...

HTH

Thanks guys I will ask him to give me the exact details and the test he did but I feel like he is just trying to take me on a ride. I ask people at work too and they were telling me that 10k is just to much like KODIAC says they told me that same that even if it was a cylinder that cracked that it does not cost 10k to fix that. I will give you the heads up on what is going on with my car I will get a second opinion today and ill post what they tell me today or tomorrow depending on when they tell me. I feel like I should just get rid if my NSX but I love that car so much that I cant. to much money to fix and to much money to keep it in the up and up.

Well I just talk to him on the phone and he told me that there is water in the oil dip stick. And that by the looks of it my block is cracked.

Let me tell you guys how this happen to me. I was driving my car and like I told you it have a turbo that is doing 6 pounds of boost. Well I rev the car up to like 7000 to 7500 rpm for like 3 seconds give or take 1 sec. I have done this before and the car never blow out white smoke. Like I was saying I really did not feel nothing just when I got home I notice the smoke.

maybe this will give you guys a better idea and could help me out more. I just have no idea what to think of it. I mean if it is that the Block is cracked what would you guys think that would cost. Cause if its over 5000 dollars I am just going to have to get rid of the car cause I cant really afford to keep that car cause I have other bill I have to pay.

For sure it's time for a second opinion. If there really is coolant in the oil, which is very possible, then you do have a problem. But it's a big leap to the conclusion that you have a cracked block unless he has more info than we've heard. It is far more likely that you have a blown head gasket. That's no fun, but it won't run any $5k much less $10k, even if you did both for good measure. That's assuming the heads aren't warped and the miles are low enough that you wouldn't consider additional head work to freshen them up while they're off. Be sure the heads are flat or have them resurfaced to get them there. This is all the more important in a boosted car.

BTW, holding it a 7-7.5k for a few seconds should not be a problem at all. I’m assuming you were in a gear at that point so the sustained boost may have been the last straw so to speak, but that just means you were on the verge anyway.

Vamp,
I can help you with this. I'm going thru the same thing. PM me and I'll tell you what to do and look for. I only know this because some other great Prime members have gone out of thier way to help me.

thanks guys for your help. The more info I get on my car ill post it for you guys to see and give me your opinion.

I really appreciate your help.

If it is a blown head gasket (which is far more likely than a cracked block), I would recommend calling Bruce Pettitt for a quote. Even if you can't get your car to him, he is very knowledgeable on the NSX and will give you a fair quote.
