Whistle noise inside cabin!

After an easy warm up track session with a student, the car was parked and the engine was turned off but there was a sharp whistlening noise (like when the kettle starts whistling) from the center of the cabin - between the seats to the rear. It was not from the engine bay. Turning the ignition switch to the on position and off did not make a difference. AC/Heater was off. The sound went away after about a minute or so. Any ideas? Is it the inside AC temp sensor going bad? Outside ambient temp was in the 60s.

I drove the car in subsequent sessions, the following day and no such symptoms!

I did a search and found this topic but it does not appear to be the same noise source. http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17494&highlight=Whistle

Thanks in advance.

Hi Hrant,

The link you have is to a user profile for Gheba_NSX. Must be a typo in it:). Make sure this sound is not actually coming from the firewall just behind you. This sounds like the vacuum purge valve. That setup is different on ODBII cars and the control valve is located just up from where you mention, in the engine bay.

Just a guess:).

Thanks Larry. I am not sure what the vaccum purge vavle does ........... but assuming that is the problem, was the noise the result of a self adjusting/calibrating (i.e. purge?) process or an indication of more problems to come?

I have had my 98 since new and this is the first time I have heard such a whistle!

Hi Hrant,

There is a series of smaller to mid size vacuum hoses, just behind your head in th engine bay (by the fuse box). Have a look and check for loose hoses and/or cracked hoses. Just an FYI, often there is a small vacuum sound heard when an NSX is shut off and it is really quiet(It is the vacuuum canister for the EGR, bleeding down).

No Biggie:).
