Whirring Clutch Sound

Howdy, I just had my clutch replaced at the Acura dealer about 4 days ago, I was driving around town yesterday and I noticed that when I have the clutch pedal pushed in there is a whirring sound, it goes away as soon as the clutch pedal is released. It's not very loud, I can only hear it when there are no other vehicles around me and I am stopped. I went and started the car last night and pushed the pedal in and the sound wasn't there, but after driving it a couple blocks away the sound appeared again.

I am going to phone the Service manager and ask if he can take a look, but I'd like to know if I should drive it the 2 1/2 hours to the nearest Acura dealer, or if I should trailer it there.

Was the noise present before the new clutch?

(I suspect you don't know...but, in the future, you should always do a NVH test prior to any critical work so you know what is different and what is not.)

Edit: I'm sorry. I got the up/down sequence wrong.

Put transmission in gear to prevent main shaft from moving while your clutch pedal is down.
It could either be a pilot bearing or throw-out bearing.

Either could be normal depending on NVH.

NVH - noise, vibration, harshness

I'm fairly sure that the noise wasn't there before the clutch job, I park in my garage every night and now when I pull in I can really hear it, I'm sure I would have noticed it before. I'll play around with it a bit more tonight after work and try to find out if it makes the noise with the tranny in gear like you suggested.

I'm booked in for next Monday to have it looked at, it's a long way to go for a check-up.

Move to Edmonton and stop complaining already, that way we can cruise everynite. lol
Fab will get on top of that for you.
Its the shits though you are so far away. Let us know what it is!

My '92 clutch makes some noises as well. It was replaced by a dealer about 15k miles ago, so it's still relatively new. I think that this is normal for these cars. I noticed this in another NSX which I test drove when searching for a car.

Well it's good to know that other people have the same issue and haven't had it explode on them. I'll still take it to the dealership to get checked out next Monday and while I'm there I'll probably get the timing belt done for good measure.

Haha, it would be nice to live in Edmonton, I make the trip from Lloyd way too much. I'm really disapointed I missed that last meeting.

You should probably have the clutch adjustment looked at on the master cylinder. The release fork may be riding the release bearing improperly.

take care,

If that was the case do you think it's okay to drive it the two hours to the Acura dealer? Or will I be wrecking my clutch, fork, or release bearing?

Make sure you have some play in the pedal and it will be fine to drive. If there is no play it could slip, not good:).

Too far out, and it will slip. Too far in, and it will not disengage the clutch properly causing the discs to not release resulting in crunchy gear shifts (especially trying to get it into 1st). If it's driving ok now, you should be fine to drive it to the dealership.

BTW, I assume you have the factory clutch. In that case, also make sure that they did the clutch disc alignment during install.

Cheers,

Oi, you're stressing me out man, now I'm second guessing the install. It drives fine right now, there is play in the pedal. Also the sound does not occur until a short time after I have driven the car.

Also thanks a lot for everyones replys to my question.

Chris, I've experienced this since I've owned my car! Drives me nuts... My NSX mechanic in San Francisco could never find a problem, and probably thought I was crazy for constantly bringing it up.

Will just a simple adjustment fix this?

A simple mechanic change might. :)
