Looking for information. I've been running Porshe "Big Reds" for the last three years with stock wheels and aftermarket spacers. Has anyone has any experience with this brake package and 17" aftermarket wheels? If so, would you provide details such as type of wheel and what modifications were necessary to make it fit. If you feel more comfortable replying privately, my email is [email protected].

So far, I think Andrie has done the most work on this. He has yet to find a wheel that will clear the big reds with out a spacer. I think the Bridgestone GC07C forged wheels in the 34+, 36+ offset will work, but I am not 100%. You will need to run 215/40zr17 in the front to make sure it doesn't rub on a lowered car.

Hey Chuck,

I have the big red as well. Running stock 16/17 with 25mm spacers. While I have no issue running with spacers, I would like to be able to stuff bigger wheels that can accomodate wider rubber.

So far, I have yet to find a wheel that clear the Porsche big red that can allow you to put wider tires. I see no point in upgrading to 17" wheels, if the width stay the same and if it only allows same width of tires.

So far, the Bridgestone GC-07 Chris mentioned look promising. But the 17x7.5 in 45 offset will mean the widest tire you can put is 215. Which beat the purpose of upgrading.

I'm still working on the possible wheel, and currently suspect the SSR GT1 in 17x8 should clear. I will find out soon, and will let you know the findings.

On another note, do you upgraded the rear brake, or do you have bias valve in your car? I find the Porsche brakes upset the brake balance of the car, if you just put the front. In the track (when I had just the front brake), I would need to help the rear brakes with engine braking. (Anybody who said engines are not for braking need to watch F1 in Canada last weekend. When the pit, told Montoya to use the engine braking to slow the car down). When I installed the bias valve, I thought the problem shoudl be solve. Boy I was wrong. Since then I upgraded the rear to the one ScienceofSpeed sell. With this I was able to ge the balance right with minimal adjustment in the bias valve. Next time I go to the track, I'll take the bias valve out, since I guesstimate that it should work fine without it.

Email me if you have any questions.

Hi Andrie,
I ran the same setup as you for the last three years. Two years ago I cut the 25mm spacers to 21mm. I've tried the SSR GT1 17x8 and it takes a 5mm spacer to clear the caliper but then the tire sticks out beyound the fender. I tried the Tecno 17x8 with a 5mm spacer and it worked, just barely. That's the way I was going to go but no-one has tecno's for sale any longer. I'll be trying a couple of other options in the next few days and I'll let you know how I make out.
As far as brake balance goes, when I had the "Big Reds" on my '95, I used RM's rear brake upgrade (larger rotor with stock caliper). On my 99, I feel the larger stock brake works fine so I sold the RM rear setup. The other thing that I do is run the stock Porsche pads. When I first bought the kit, I used Padgit Orange. I found I didn't need the $235 pads and that the stock $92 Porsche pads work just fine.

What kind of suspension do you have? Cause the Techno with the 5mm spacers will rub if you are using 235/40/17 tires.

What kind of spacer do you have? The H&R? How did you cut them? From the outside or inside?

Keep me updated. Thanks.

I have a Zanardi although I recently installed Comptech/Eibach springs. Now it is lower.
I ordered my spacers from Movit', the maker of the brake kit, when I ordered the brakes. After the first year, I took the spacers to a machine shop and had them cut off some of what I considered excess.

There are a lot rotor fitments available for the big red caliper. But going to bigger rotors means you have to get or fabricate different mouting bracket as well. Not too hard to do. I believe Porsche has choices of rotors up to 14.9" from the factory.

Back when I bought mine, there were only two rotors available. The ones that came with the 993TT and a 14" rotor/caliper setup.

FWIW, I just tested the O.Z. Racing Superleggra 17x8 with my Porsche brakes and it won't clear the caliper even with a 5mm spacer.
