Hi Guys,
I will be powdercoating a set of wheels gloss white. $100 per wheel. 3 wheels are perfect and one has a 2 mm nick on the lip. I was going to just sent that one wheel to Wheel America to fix and powdercoat for a flat rate of $129 but they don't have powder in white. So I need to see if you guys know of any place that will fill in that nick for cheap. All I need is some filling and smoothening at that particular nick so I can powercoat the whole thing. I thought about just powdercoating it as is since the flaw is so small and probably no one will notice. But I want to see what my options are.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve, another alternative if the nick is really small is to just sand it out with sandpaper. Start with a course grade and slowly work into the fine stuff.....I've done it before and the results were nearly perfect! :)

So you're going to powdercoat those 18/19's? Can't wait to see the results!

Wheel Techniques - I've heard good things about them. Also check with Sidney out in Alameda (I think you know him, but I don't remember his Prime handle). He once told me about a good wheel repair place.

AVOID, AVOID Wheels America. I had a wheel repaired by them once. Repair came out ok, but they didn't re-clearcoat as they said they would. When I came back due to my wheel discoloring, they claimed the wheel wasn't repaired there. When I came back with the reciept, they claimed that wasn't the wheel they repaired. So much for their gaurantee. This was the Wheels America on Whipple in Hayward. Wheels America is like the fast food of Wheel Repair (ok, now that I have that off of my chest, back to our regular programming).

Yes, I sent the 18/19 wheels to the powdercoater today and hopefully I can pick them up next week. I did not fix that rim since I figure it would not make any difference.

My name is Bob Stertch and I am the owner of Wheels America.

I am saddened that my staff in CA did not warranty a wheel when they should have. If you say it should have been warrantied, then that is good enough for me. I am sorry my staff did not honor that warranty due to an invoice issue. They should have.

Second, we DO offer powder coating, in whatever color you may want. They clearly made an error when they said we do not offer white.

A note about powder coating. It works GREAT on 99% of the wheels out there. For race wheels, however, it can be a problem because the sustained temperature of the wheel is so high that brake dust particles tend to embed themselves in the powder coating when the temp are high. For that reason we sometimes do not powder race wheels.

Wheels America has been in business since 1994 and has 9 locations nationwide. We are not a franchise, I am the majoirty owner in every location. As with all businesses, my employees make mistakes. I assure you all the mistakes made in this case will not go unnoticed by myself or my staff.

We are fast, but we are not fast food! Our business was built on 24 hour service because I know most people don't want their car out of commission for several days. Don't confuse this with poor quality. We are the only wheel repair facility that I know of that has had wheels fatigue and stress tested using the same standards as a manufacturer. We serialize every wheel we repair, and record critical data on every wheel we repair. Much of our processes and equipment have been developed internally. We have patents pending on equipment we have developed and processed. And, to date, we have repaired over a million wheels.

We have been racers and car guys forever, we understand. We keep inventory in stock (even NSX wheels!).

MickeyLex please contact me and I will send you some coupons for free wheel repair. Not just for the wheel we shoudl have warrantied, but for any wheel you need repaired. I cannot undo the error that my staff made, but I will do what I can to make the situation right.

If any of you would like to contact me I can be reached at bob at fixrim dot com.

Thanks for reading.

Sigh! Bob, I wish I sent the wheel to your company instead, if I knew your company had white powdercoating. The white is called Reflective White and is carried by all powdercoaters. I am sure you have that color. Thanks for such a sincere post to clarify the mistake. I totally understand your situation since I am in similar setting that my staff at work periodically make some totally dumb mistakes. It takes one second to do wrong but often it would take me hours to months to correct them. At times I get very frustrated and wish I could have just do the tasks myself. Then I thought about it. If my staff is as competent (or incompetent:tongue:) as I am, they would not have been my staff but could have been my boss instead.
Anyway, thanks a million for the clarifications.

Have you tried/heard of Wheel Techniques? They do real good work.

Steve,
I had my wheels painted but not power coated at wheel technique, it was good but I would rather have it power coated next time. Post some pictures when they are done.

So I called back at 800-409-9499 which is the Hayward branch.

The guy answered the phone: Wheels America. May I help you?
Me. Hi, I called a few days ago inquiring about powder coating. Were you the one I spoke to?
The guy: Yeah, I remember you.
Me: You said white is not available, right?
The guy: Yes, that's correct.
Me. But I was just told by a guy named Bob Stertch who claimed he owned the company that I could order any color I want.
The guy: (a little pause) Right. I don't have the white powder here but I can order it and it will take 2 days.
Me: OK, so I can bring you the wheel and you will fix and powdercoat it white, right?
The guy: Yes
Me: Thanks a lot. Bye!

So much for this nonsense. If I did not mention Bob's name, he probably turned me away again. Now I have a flawed white wheel that could have been fixed by Wheel America and powdercoated to white. I think Bob should talk with his men so to minimize these loss of business.

Hi Nalesh,
I exchanged emails with Bob Stretch( "Stertch is typo" ). He is very sincere, upstanding and classy. He has offered you coupons for free repair for other wheels. He also offered to do my wheel for FREE!!!! This is what I call unbelievably awesome customer's services and accountability. I have not seen any owner of business go so far to make some internet guy like me happy. He got my businesses for life. I had 2 wheels repaired by them a few years ago and they came out very good. Bob means to be excellent but just unfortunately had some glitches from his staff. Either way, I am very impressed by Mr. Stretch. I know you will agree.

Steve,
I agree about Bob. It is awesome of him to respond here on Prime. Clearly he is about customer service. It's just unfortunate that the Hayward location is a little lacking in the customer service area; though I'm sure Bob will address that given our feedback here.

Bob,
Thanks for taking the time to listen and provide feedback. I'll contact you regarding your generous offer to fix my wheel.
