What's the catch?

The car probably exists, they're probably actually selling it, but they'll often put a stupidly low price on cars like this to get people who are already looking for one to call them. Once you call them, they can talk with you and haggle over price after they claim the posted price was a typo/error, when it was done intentionally.

It's just a way to get people to call - if they put what they really want for it (likely higher than the going rate since the type of person/business who sells exotics doesn't dick around) nobody would call.

Scam.

He won't have the car. It'll be in storage somewhere. Somewhere inconvenient, like at the UPS shipping depot in a container, in Atlanta. You'll need to send money to his paypal or other account and then he'll have his broker ship it to you. blah blah blah, it's getting old.

Ahh yes that's the other one.

"I'm out of the country at the moment but I can send it anywhere and if you don't want it when it gets there you can return it and I'll pay the shipping"

or, "I just got divorced and it's my ex-husbands. I will ship it to you and you tell me if it's worth 10k. If not ship it back, I'll pay shipping." Then comes the talk of escrow...

People must still fall for those.

Yeah, right:wink:

This was also posted for sale in Ont Trader... I E-mailed them... scam... I should post the emails, another I'm overseas scam...

Yup its a scam. I've been in regular contact with her. She advised she got the car from a divorce. But she is out of the country and the car is in Toronto. I asked to see the car, but she said because of "past" bad experiences she now requires a $2000 deposit in an Escrow account. She said the $2000 is to make sure I will be there when she comes back to the country, because she had a previous buyer NOT show up. YEAH RIGHT!

Here is the catch, I' am a Police Officer in Toronto. I did a VIN# check, and the car does not exist ( at least not in Ontario ). I further asked for her info, and a license plate and advised her that her vehicle is not on our system. Since then she stopped replying to my emails.

Check out our emails: Bottom of the page is where it starts. I asked several questions, each time with no reply.

I understand you in this moment but I can't help you more... Sorry . Hope you can find another car!

Barbara

Thanks. But I still need the proper VIN# and License plates # before I make the deposit. Like I said, I did a Ministry of Ontario vehicle search on our system, and nothing came up. So technically the vehicle does not exist. I will make the deposit once I have the proper documents from you, I hope you understand as I am protecting myself. You still haven't given me your contact info yet. I go back to work on Wednesday. After that my availability will be morning and early afternoon only. I am an honest person, if I said I will show up, I will. I won't flake off like the others. But I need a proper VIN# + plates first.

That sounds good. Just curious if you have the VIN correctly posted. I went to the station and ran the VIN on our computers and nothing came up. Is the car currently registered with valid Ontario License plates? If so what is the plate? Since you have my info, may I ask the same from you?

He was very interested in the car and he made me come all the way to Toronto. I spent 5 hours at the airport trying to reach him, without success. I was very upset and i hope you understand my point of view. An Escrow company works this way: the buyer makes a deposit (in your case $2,000). They will keep the deposit untill you see and inspect the car. If for some reasons you decide not to buy it, they will give your money back. Only if you decide to buy it, they will release the deposit to me. This sounds fair with me because the car is as I described it and I belive this way we both are protected.
I applied for an escrow membership and I am still awaiting their reply, meanwhile I would need your full name, address and phone number for me to inform them to contact you also with more details. Yes the car is on my name.
Thank you,
Barbara

I am available anytime from today to Wednesday April 23. Then I will be available from the morning till 4pm up to April 29. I would like to get this done as soon as possible as I will be going on a vacation down south April 30. There are a couple NSX's I have been looking at in Florida.

Would there be any pictures you can send of the car? Do you have any documentations (repairs? inspections? etc etc) Is the ownership in your name? My mechanic is in Oakville, and I would like him to take a look at it. If all is ok, then I will give you your cash payment. Thanks for the speedy reply.

The car is garaged in Toronto, ON. We stayed only for a couple of months there, so I didn't really had someone to trust the car with and I had to garage it. I am sorry but I am the only one who has access to it... Travelling is not a problem because I work for an Airline.
I just want to be sure that you are serious about buying the car before I start making arrangements.
If you are ready to buy I can meet you next week, just let me know when so I can make proper arrangements. My only request is that you make an $2,000 down payment for the car before I get there. I need a guarantee that I won't loose my time. Don't get me wrong but I have other serious offers that I have to consider and I will make a decision regarding this sale function of time and payment method (I prefer cash). The first person that will make the deposit will have the car reserved in his/her name.
The car is as described, in excellent condition and has a clear title. It is a very reliable car, runs like new and you won't have any problems with it as long as you maintain it properly.Because I don't know to much about cars I don't have any objection regarding a mechanical inspection.
Email me if you feel comfortable about this and i will send you more details.
Thank you,
Barbara
P.S: We will use an Escrow company for the down payment, so it is 100% refundable if you won't like the car or if it fails the mechanical test.

I am available anytime today. Do you have all the proper documentations, and perhaps any bills of recent repairs? Do you know if the car has even been stolen? And previous owners? You have to understand I do have some concerns, I am a Police officer by occupation in Toronto and have dealt with many "bait and switch" moves.

But I am a very serious buyer, with cash up front, or bank draft. Thanks for the quick reply.

Hello, I saw your ad for your 2000 ACURA NSX-T in the Autotrader for sale for $12,000. Is the car still for sale and where is your vehicle located for viewing in the GTA? I tried calling your 416-361-1225 yesterday and does not seem to be working?

Barbara,

I'm located about an hour outside of Toronto I would be willing to make the arrangements to come down and see the car. I will be in Toronto this week on business I can stop by and take a look at the NSX. What service records do you have on the car, I can check where did you have the car serviced? Sorry to hear about your divorce these things are sometimes complicated to deal with, let me know if I can view the car and we can make arrangements to meet for purchase if everything checks out.

Thanks,

Barbra,

I checked the VIN number jh4na2160yt000168 you supplied from your NSX over the week-end and the ministry has no record of its registration in Ontario? Can you please explain how that is possible? When was the last emissions test done, there is nothing in the government system for the last 3 years, an emissions test is due every 2 years by law?

You also didn't answer my question about the previous service history, where was the car serviced, and can you send me the history you have? I am about an hour away from the GTA I can have the car inspected by my Mechanic located in Kitchener, he is willing to come down with me to inspect the car at your location in Toronto. After a clean mechanical inspection I will give you $2000 cash towards the purchase total of $12000.

I honestly do not feel safe sending you $2000 in escrow, please understand with all the scams being run these days its just not wise to do so. Especially with you posting an invalid telephone # in the ad, and a car that doesn't appear to be registered in Ontario? I'm a serious buyer with cash in hand please don't waste my time with a scam.

Thanks,

Can any of you post the actual headers of the e-mail? Depending on what you guys want done, I can do more research and find out more about the scammer or have their E-mail accounts shut down...

Yea this is too funny she or he is posting it everywhere. Talking to a buddy of mine and we looked at the photos, I recall now seeing the same car for sale in B.C Trader about 2 years ago... Looks like the just stole the pics and reused them as a fake ad. I also noticed another ad a few weeks ago for an RX7 very cheap with the same if not similar Email address... Damn scammers need to get a life

Looks like the miscreant is connecting via AOL dial-up / ISP services and using free e-mail from Microsoft i.e. Hotmail and Live.

If MaITR99 is willing to step in on behalf of Law Enforcement, we could probably get AOL to provide the info required locate the exact user provided that the user actually used legitimate credentials for AOL but probably unlikely and is probably using a stolen AOL account/s to access the net.

Which means going down to the Telco level to locate the perp. Cross border Law enforcement is always tricky and marred with red tape...

Crime is rampant on the internet because law enforcement has jurisdictional boundaries that the e-criminal need not worry about.

Miscreant outside North America uses large North American ISP credentials obtained by Malware / Viruses / Trojans, uses large free E-mail services like Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail or even compromised free E-mail accounts to run scams in Canada, US, etc. The amount of effort to investigate, build a case and bring the information across international law enforcement borders at present, seems to be "too slow, too difficult".

Wow 2 in one week... here is another one I found for a G35, the phone # works on this one guess where it goes to a St Marks Presbyterian Church 1 Greenland Rd , Toronto... too funny another divorce & relocation to the UK I didn't even bother to reply back. lol

Same MO. This once connecting from a Comcast residential ISP dynamic IP pool again using Microsoft's live.com free E-mail or compromised e-mail account to run the scam.

The only reason these people continue to do this is because there is a sucker born every second and yes, people fall for it. If it's widespread enough and 2 people fall for this every 30 days and drop a total of $2k - $4k worth in deposit or whatever... it makes it worthwhile to do.

The kind of stuff out there that I have seen, you won't believe and I won't talk about it here. We can chat at the next outing... maybe at GPkarting or Est Fest...
