As an anniversary present to my mother, my father is putting together a DVD compilation of pictures of their life together that he wants to overdub with a couple of their favorite songs. Since he barely knows how to use a computer, he asked me if I could help him get the 4 songs for him. Before all of the piracy policies, I used kazaa and bearshare in the past with good success, but when it was made illegal, I haven't used it again. I only need four songs and don't want to subscribe for two years to some service when I will not ever use it again.

I went to itunes and got two of them, but they are in mp4 format which I know little about. I would need to convert it to a wav format so I can play with a normal CD player, but I don't have the software to do that and don't know how it differs from mp3. (used up most all mp3 to wav free trials in the past when I downloaded music) I can't find the other two on Itunes.

I don't care about paying for the songs because they are only $.99, but I don't want to spend $50-60 subscribing to sites, getting different conversion software for mp3's and mp4's for only 4 songs. Any recommendations for a born again newby since I have lost touch with this?

allofmp3.com is a music download site widely publicized on TechTV/G4 and other cable television news. I believe that the site is based in Russia and they carry all the latest music from around the world at 7 to 15 cents per song. I think you are allowed to choose the format in which you want to download the song such as mp3, aac, wma, etc. It might be worth checking it out.

Limewire works great for me.

get it at:

www.limewire.com

Is this a legal method of downloading? I am looking to make sure I am doing it right, but don't want to subscribe to a one or two year committment when this is the only time that I will use it?

Legal? I'd say about as legal as driving >6mph over the speed limit.

Actually, if you are referring to copyright infringment, it depends on what you download.

btw. unlike Morpheus, Limewire is difficult for anyone to track you down.

This is the cheapest legal way to download. Amazing deal.

Ok, plans have now changed a little. I thought this was going to be a one time thing for my father, but my wife just bought me an IPOD 30 Gig for my birthday, so it looks like I may not mind a monthly service for unlimited downloads. As long as it isn't corrupted with viruses and spyware, and has a lot on it. I will look at the suggestions you have all made and want to see what the new Napster and the pay Kazaa is like as well.

Hey there! I have actually been thinking of putting together a bunch of older pictures of my family on a DVD as well. The photos are not in digital form. How are you putting them together into the DVD?? Are you doing it yourself, or are you having a company provide the service for you? Would love to know!! ThaNSX*!!

In iTunes, you can create a playlist of your purchased songs and then burn them onto a standard audio CD. Once it's on a standard burned CD, you can turn around and rip them into regular MP3 or AIFF or whatever format to use in creating your DVD. You already have the songs, might as well use them. Just make sure in the iTunes preferences you have it set to burn a regular audio CD rather than a data or MP3 CD.

You'll have to scan the photos in (eg. flatbed scanner, negative scanner, etc) to get them into digital form first.

so, you wouldn't mind if someone came by and took your nsx for a joyride, cause, after all, it's just a car, right?

It's really cheap to operate when they don't pay any money to the copyright owners. I don't think you can really call this "legal" though. (Not to say that I'm any less guilty than others, just pointing out that "legal" is dubious here).

Wish I could help, but my Dad is having someone do it for him. He is in your neck of the woods (Ocala) and I am in St. Louis. Ok not that close, but a lot closer than I am. All I have to do is send him the 4 songs on a disc.
