What is this fan

Just bought a 93 NSX. There is a fan in the engine bay behind the driver seat. Never seem to turn on. Anyone know what is the fan for and when is it supposed to be activated?

Engine compartment fan. Only comes on in a near overheating situation of the engine. Was removed from the NSX in later years.
