What is the best exhaust system for the NSX?

I'm aware of the fact that exhaust systems are like music (almost, literally). What one will like, another will dislike. I currently own a '98 NSX in London, Ontario, and wouldn't mind picking up an exhaust system for it. The last thing I want however, is that cheap, cliche Civic sound you hear on countless junkers on our streets. Is there any exhaust system out there, where the consensus among NSX veterans is that it really does make the car sound like the true exotic it is? I'm not looking for mere noise for the interest of attention (my CD player spews out enough noise for that purpose considering my bad taste in music). ;) I'm looking for anything that'll make the NSX sound like an exotic beast, not only when accelerating, but even when standing at a red light. When you hear a Ferrari, several cars behind you... you turn around, knowing there's something exotic nearby. I wish there was something out there, that could give the NSX a similiar audible distinction. Any tips? I have been told about the Stebro SS system (currently on eBay at $2400 US) by a friend of mine here in town, but... the video clips, don't sound all that great. Then again, they are mere low quality clips.

Any help, insights, will be greatly appreciated.

If you can find a Tubi, I like that sound the best. But I think they've been out of production for some time.

The Comptech has a very nice sound to it and is well made, and very trusted in the NSX community.

I like my Ark DTS, but as you say it's all subjective.

I would call Chris at science of speed and talk to him. He'll know all the systems out there and be able to recomend one to you for sure.

BTW, $2400 is pricey unless you're getting into a titanium system.

I'm no expert in automoticve engineering but the exhaust note of a car is very much a product of the engine design, displacement, configuration and length of piping from headers back.

I don't think its even possible for a 3-3.2L, V6 with short pipes (since its mid engined and don't need to run the exhaust gases through the length of the car) to sound like a "cheap, cliche Civic sound".

I run an ARK DT-S and love it. Its almost a little too loud for my tastes (the main reason why I don't want to go with headers and hi-flow cats) but the sound, especially in tunnels and high-walled areas is awesome.

EDIT: as much as I love the sounds out of my NSX, I still have a soft spot for a tuned, boosted straight six. :)

My cheap old flowmaster is the bomb for me.
At idle its the gas dude.
At 5000 to 8000 rpm, look out!
In a tunnel, wow!
Eddie drives behind me so when I get the attention, everyone sees him in his car. Kind of rips me off you know!!!
I haven't had one bad comment yet and people are always bad mouthing me.
Depends on what you want to spend as well.
Its nice to hear them all in person.
Of course your catz on or off will also change the sound out of a design.
Get with the others and see what you like before jumpin in.

I'm running a B+B TriFlow and LOVE IT! It's not Ricey at all. It's a low drone at idle, and anything above that is sweet perfection. I love loud exhaustts, so my only complaint would be that it is not loud enough (still louder than most though).

Oh if I could only get my mits on an "Anytime Exhaust"!! I would pay GOOD money for one of those.

Thanks for the followup guys. I've checked out some of the samples here on the forum, as well as other areas on the web, but... really, no digital computer sample can do much to accurately convey the sound of an exhaust, so I'm still at ground zero. Are there any NSX meetings/cruises, etc, planned in the southwestern region anytime soon, which would give me a chance to hear what some of you guys have on your NSX's for exhausts? I'm moving down to Florida for the winter soon (I only spend my spring/summers in Canada), so in all likelyhood, will aquire an exhaust once there... but it would be good to familiarize myself with a few before heading down there.

Cheers,
PJ

I run am RM exhaust and personally like it vs. the Comptech noise maker.

I too have an RM exhaust. I bought it used but it was in great condition. Just installed it less than a month ago and I love it. It has a deep, but distinctive sound. :D

I am running a Tubi that I modified to fit the 02 valence (4" Magnaflow SS tips). Love it. I will soon part with it ONLY to go turbo. I was told it would be too much trouble to try and modify it with the turbo system.

My 91 came with a new Dali exhaust and it is soooo phat! Tunnels are the rave baby:biggrin: ... it sounds exotic and not irritating!! It does not sound exactly like a Ferrari but it does turn people's heads...and its never in a negative way...as the engine revs up, the exhaust howls beautifully, and people give the thumbs-up sign or try to catch up to see what type of car went by in a blur...lol...lol

Ive got the Taitec JGTC Parallel. Like it very much - its deep and loud, but after listening to those ALMS corvettes its no longer adequate. :D

But it is as loud as I think I could reasonably asky my neighbours to put up with. Ive gotten comments re my coming and going weekly from them since I got it.

Just something to think about.

Ask Turbo2go Dave about the incident between his car and his boyfriends house. It isnt often that you see a car door in your entry way. All because he thinks his car is too loud to turn on so early in the AM. He thought it was smarter to push the car out of the garage, and then down the street, than drive it; guess he was wrong. Very considerate, but wrong.

WHAT???

Someone pulled the door off his car?

Like I said, he didnt want to turn his car on so early in the AM for fear of waking neighbours because his car is so damn loud.

Very considerate.

So he opened up his door, grabbed the wheel, and tried to push it out.

As his car rolled back, the door caught the wall and went through the dry wall of the garage and into the entry way of the house, destroying the wall between them in the process.

That was less considerate of him.

Good news is that we know that the structure supporting the door onto the car is damn strong to stop a car that is rollling backwards. No damage to the car.

Thatll learn him.

I found this out over lunch in Boston a couple months back. Cant believe that Ive sat on this gem of a story since.

Cats out of the bag now!

So what's the part about it not being his own house?

Best exhaust? OEM! Purrs like a civic when idling and is neighbor friendly!

Truthfully I would like something a bit more aggressive but have a hard time justifying the cost to replace a prerfectly good exhaust ... maybe when it needs replacing in 20 years or so.

I got the ARC titanium with the quad tips, it is a pretty sweet sounding exhaust, very distinct and exotic. What ever exhaust you buy take the cats out and let the beast breathe!!!. Every NSX sounds and drives better with test pipes.

NSXTREMIST - Nice car!
Where are you in Canada, your profile doesn't show.
Any pics of the exhaust or your sound clips.

CAVEMAN - Dan, you and Ryan can share my exhaust while my engine is out at the end of the month. That would be the best way to make a decision, throw someone else's exhaust on your car.
Thats what friends are for. Wow, sounds like a song, better start writing! I'll make it country with a twang.

I have a comptech and love the sound from the inside while driving... But from the outside, I'm not all too crazy about it, does anyone else agree?
