Hello guys,

I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on this...From a security and safegaurd standpoint from theft or vandalism.

Is it safer to park your car at work in a structure where it is required a card clearence to raise the wooden gate(the kind at toll booths, I am not refering to some kind of high security gate) or outside and expose it to damage from the sun?

How do you guys park your cars at work?

I would presume that structures are easier for criminals to hide, while outside environment will make it less prone to theft or vandalism, IMO.

From a wear and tear perspective, inside is always better. Leaving it out in the sun all day will dull the paint and interior. Leaving it out all day on a regular basis in the hot sun is a bad idea. If you must, use a cover.

I personally prefer indoor parking regardless. I am less afraid of theft than I am of vandalism. If the car is stolen, my insurance and additional gap insurance will cover my entire cost. If my car is keyed, my 1K deductible alone will hurt the bank account. If it's outside on a small street, I cover the car at all times. Most people who would randomly damage a car will not go through the trouble of lifting the cover.

I feel a car is safer inside. I keep it alarmed, clubed, and covered. If someone wants to steal it bad enough and go through the trouble of my precations there is nothing I can do. It's better than leaving it outside all the time. Out of sight, out of mind.

You are focusing on the inside vs outside question, whereas you need to look at the total security environment. Some lots and garages have security people who make rounds periodically throughout the day; some don't. Some lots and garages have remote video surveillance; some don't. Some lots and garages are in high-traffic areas with public access; some aren't. Even if access is restricted as you describe, it may be possible for someone to walk in and vandalize a car, and this is more likely in an area where the cars are visible from the street. You need to take all of that into account in deciding where to park.

Inside is better IMO because less exposure to sun.

For security you can put an alarm, club, autolock, kill switch, teletrac, lojack, etc. and that should slow the thief down. If he/she wants the car bad he/she will probably get it. That is why we have insurance.
